Would I Be Mad...
« on: May 04, 2018, 09:13:22 AM »
Would I be mad to buy another whole Like as parts for the one I have?

A Like 125 has come up, in the same colour as my Like 200.

Unfortunately it's carburetted, but I can see there's real spares potential.

The bike is £300 delivered.

Quick costings;

~ I get a set of wheels - worth £60 to me I reckon
~ If there's one good tyre that's £30 I don't have to spend on the next one. Michelin on the front.
~ Forks are worth £60 to me to have as spares!
~ Pair of brake levers are worth £30 to me
~ I strongly suspect I'll be needing a pair of new brake callipers for my 200 - worth another £50 probably.

~ The exhaust is no good to me - it's worth £80 on eBay though to someone else! So I can deduct that
~ Carburettor is useless to me - but again, £30 on eBay

So £230's worth of parts off it are good for me to keep, and I reckon I can get £110 back on eBay at the least.

So £340 of the bike is accounted for before I start even delving into the engine, brackets, body panels, lights, mirrors etc.

Before I go and try to rationalise this decision to my other half, can anyone confirm for me that this isn't crazy logic? :)

For what it's worth, in 27 years of marriage, I've discovered that the three best words any man can say to his wife are:

I'm sorry, dear...

Forgiveness is always easier than permission.
Two things to consider...
1) The early bird might get the worm, but the second mouse always gets the cheese.
2) Eagles may soar, but weasels never get sucked into jet engines.

I've also thought about getting another scoot for spares because Kymco parts are quite expensive and sometimes hard to come by.
If all the plastic bits are ok it could be a good investment in the long run (if you intend on keeping your scoot).

And the best 7 words are...:

'Of course I'll tap on your shoulder'

If you haven't already, I recommend taking a look at the parts fiche and double-checking some part numbers before you keep spares in case stuff like the fork springs and valving is different.

Bikes are certainly worth more dead than alive. You get the best deal from the factory when the bike rolls off the line for the smorgasbord of parts, and the vehicle runs to boot!

All the more reason to secure your bike when parked!

It's here. I managed to get a fair whack off the price in the end.

Not all of it is good, but a fair whack of it is.

Keeping in mind what's been said here about the parts being the same between the two bikes, I'll be checking them before I store them away.

Some of the plastics are OK, some not so good!

On the whole, though, I think it was a good move.

It's hidden out of sight behind the shed and she's pretty much forgotten about it already.

It has better rear shocks than mine, so I'll be nabbing those, and the wheels and the forks will be coming off. The seat seems a lot more plush as well, bizarrely.

If I can get it started up and running in the frame, and I can't see why it wouldn't, I know the engine and carb are good, and that's more squids in the bank :)

The front panel is a bit of a mess where it's been hotwired.

I'll take some pictures at the weekend and put them in the project thread!

Oh please, you must get your wife's "reaction face" in the photo with the scooter. Just for our entertainment if nothing else. 😀
