big trouble this morning!
« on: September 11, 2010, 07:49:42 PM »
Hello guys so here is what happened. I woke up this morning, got my scoot out of the shed to go to school. ( It got down to 40 degrees last night by the way ) I tried to start it and no go! it cranked an cranked and popped every once in a while but seemed to be cranking over slow! I still have the 20w50 in it that my dealer installed. Do you think this could be the problem? It took me almost a half an hour to get it going!! then, no trouble for the rest of the day as it got much warmer! I have 3 bottles of mobil 1 5w40 in the basement and wanted to ask you all if i should change the oil now that the cooler weather is moving in? Any advice you may have for me would really be appreciated!

Thank you all so much!

It can be pretty much anything, but oil type is 100% not the issue here.

Once when I was young and foolish I owned an old clunker of a car that leaked oil, so I put in some STP engine oil treatment. That crap is like molasses. On the next real cold morning, no crank. Had  it towed and the service station put in "normal" oil whie I went to work. Problem solved.

Heads up when it gets cold where I live if I dont plug my battery tender in at night it makes for a hard start in the morning. Plug her in at night and a hot battery makes for an easy start

Don't know about the oil weight.  However, it could be condensation in the carb and tank due to quick temperature drop.  Even more true if it's been humid or rainy there lately.

Get some Startron fuel additive at Walmart and put in double dose.  Rock scoot back n forth to mix in.

Doesn't sound like a battery prob since it was able to crank for half an hour.  But check your idle speed when it's fully warmed up after at least fifteen minutes of riding.  Should be 1400 plus or minus 500 rpm.  But a little higher is ok too.  This'll make sure the battery stays good n charged.  Edit: that idle speed is for the carburator version.  Don't know about the FI version.

If it does it again, try starting it with the fuel cap open.

If your bike is fuel injected I would take it to a dealer as this should not happen. The computer should be telling the injectors to give the engine more of a rich mixture of gas when it is cold, to start the bike. There may be a sensor that is not telling the injection system it is cold outside? If your bike has a carb, the carb has an automatic choke, and a heater? Yes a heater! Both of these should be looked at. The fuel pump could also be an issue on either bike. I don't think the oil is the problem. :-*

I had the exact same problem with my Xciting last winter. I finally gave up and rode my Aprilia Scarabeo all winter. It always started. I'm waiting to see if it was because the Xciting was new and not broken in yet. The winter temperatures are right around the corner here in Colorado. Time will tell. If the same thing happens I'll take it to the dealer (or a dealer) and see what can be done.
Just remember, if the world didn't suck, we'd all fall off.

I have had similar trouble as mrjlube with my x500 not starting after 3 starts in a short running distance( to/from shop/gas station/supermarket ) then it would crank , and fire once , then crank and fire once ...but not run .... this could go on for a while until it stopped firing but still cranked.l..If I got a jumper start from somebody with a car and jumper leads it was ok..I have solved this by fitting an auxiliary 7 AH battery in addition to the stock 12 AH battery

I've heard about such problems and Kymco fixed an issue with the decompression mechanism.
But I don't know the exact production time, imho around the early injection models.

I had major starting problems with my Xciting 500 last fall.  Ended up being a broken tooth on the bendix spring, at least I think that's what it's called.  There is a faster turning starter available which my dealer installed for me.  I've had no starting problems at all this year.
