Hey Karl....
« on: August 16, 2018, 01:16:36 PM »
A question there Crossbolts.
I have 4 old 12V motorcycle/scooter batteries in the garage.
I'd like to recycle at least 2 of them.

After I charge them with the battery tender - what voltage should I see on the 'keepers'?
and if it's below that then I drop them off at Batteries Plus - right?

What am I looking for?

Thanks Karl.

Charge 'em all up and load test. Recycle all that don't pass. Maybe Batteries+ have free load test like Auto Zone..thanks for asking!

I use two tests: (1) If they charge to at least 12.5 volts and (2) The initial charged voltage stays up over several days sitting. If the battery is NG you will see a drop in voltage over a few days. If it drops below 12 volts it's NG.

A load test is the only correct way but without a load tester I use #1 and #2...then cross my fingers and get ready to buy a new battery.

Yeah, no. After I'm fortified with a good cup of Joe, miles from home,  and it's time to head for home on a 17°F morning ….I don't want to be doing any finger crossing when I push the start button.

My 5 yr old LIKE200i starter was beginning  to 'grunt' noticeably upon starting. So I replaced the battery - and now it is back to firing angrily
when I touch the start button.….like it always did when it was new.

I will stop in for a Load test with these old batteries. Thinking of keeping one and carrying it under the seat of my Piaggio - in case the Piaggio's little battery gets nervous some time next winter.

A couple of years ago I got all excited about a little "bail out battery" for motorcycles for that day where the rocket would not light....until I saw the $135 price tag!

My brother has a newer Volvo and took it to Autozone to check the battery: the clerk removed the battery to load test it and when it was reinstalled the computer thought the car was stolen so it wouldn't start, the alarm wouldn't turn off, the radio needed reprogramming. He had to have it towed to the dealer to get it reprogrammed.

I drive a 1989 Camry wagon, plenty modern enough for me.

I brought a battery in for a load test and the guy there said you can load test your own batterys with a car headlight hook it up for 15 min.,   and see if the battery still has voltage  ,. he did not tell me what was the acceptable voltage after the load test,.

I purchased a lithium jump starter for the Medley as I am worried about it's small 6 ah battery and keep it in under the seat for if and when needed.  It also has a good led light and 2 USB ports for recharging.  One thing I was happy about when I looked at the Medley's battery is that it is a Yuasa battery.

Paul, I'm coming over.
We can wax our Piaggios, make pasta, and talk 6ah batteries!
Which side of the road do you drive on?....in Mad Max it didn't seem to matter. So...?

Citroen were widely a bit of a joke in the EU until maybe 10 years ago, but have made some beautiful cars since
