Protective gear and checking will not prevent hitting the ground. If somebody wants to be sure it will not happen again, the only way to go would be a cage, and even then you can get hurt or die.
A year ago I had an accident with my quad, rather nasty one.
Not riding when there is black ice on the ground will go a long way to preventing you from hitting the ground.
But there are only two types of riders - those who have hit the ground, and those who will hit the ground.
Protective gear can save your life. And prevent disabling injury. Like paralysis and broken bones and nice stuff like that. Wear your gear. And for Gods sake wear leather boots, NOT sneakers or flip flops. When I went down the insole of my boot was all scraped up, I was not. I would probably have an artificial foot if I was wearing sneakers.
