Lock set Downtown 125i
« on: April 06, 2019, 06:01:06 AM »
Hi all, had the above bike stolen, good news it was recovered bad news where the lowlifes broke the steering lock now unable to put the ignition key in to start it, new lock set ordered, question: has anybody had to change this and any tips/advice please, Dealers have quoted between £400/500 for them to do it but thought I'd check here first.
cheers,
Ray V.

Sounds like your dealer just doesn't want to mess with the panel removal.
Is the panel around the lock broken as well?
If not, I'd price the lock set and at least explore a DIY.
Hopefully a fellow Downtown owner will jump in here.
Ummm, how will you prevent this from happening again?
Are you in London?

And, I'm feeling a little peculiar.

Have not replaced the lockset on DT300i but did replace the whole bike! Har, har! My stolen and wrecked DT had the lock destroyed by the thieves driving a screwdriver into the keyslot. The panel was not destroyed! The only replacement hang-up I see is the special security bolt removal. This thing looks perfectly round cadmium plated with the center of the head rough, unplated where the extended hex was sheared off during installation. This will require ingenuity to remove! The rest should be easy.

Hi Stig, no damage to panel around switch, just right hand side black panel where they accessed the ignition to hotwire it. I am installing wall mounted anchor plate and an Insurance company recommended padlock/chain.

Hi Crossbolt, thanks for the help, is it a single bolt and is it possible to drill it at all

Yes, it is just one bolt that way. I think there is another bolt but it is a normal metric hex. Drilling is feasible but I would probably Dremel a couple of flats on it. You might be able to get a small "Vise-Grip" plier on it and then pop it loose with a hammer.

I changed the bolt in my downtown, I cut a slot with a grinder with a thin cuting wheel, then turned it out with a screw driver, on a impack drill,.  or as he said grind both sides and vice grip it out ,
