Spring
« on: February 08, 2019, 01:17:42 AM »
Hey guys,

Got a spring that I want to try. Does any of you know what 20% and 800 rpm stand for which is stamped on the spring? Curious.

It's a cheap asian spring. They don't know how torque springs are usually measured, so they make something up and call it an 800 rpm spring.  It's sort of like the goobers who call one a 1000 rpm spring, another a 1500 spring, and almost always call the red one a 2000 rpm spring. They read it somewhere and that's pretty much whaat they know about torque springs. Without knowing the stiffness, and how it compares to the OEM spring, it's hard to tell what you have.

There's a correct way to label springs, and that's with the (K) number where k is the spring constant, in Newtons per meter (N/m), and x is the displacement of the spring from its equilibrium position. The spring constant, k, is representative of how stiff the spring is. All the top aftermarket companies give K numbers for their springs.
A simpler to understand, but still much more accurate way, is to state how much stiffer it is than stock, like 10%, 20%, etc. That is accurate if you are comparing it to the stock spring of the model it was designed for, but so many springs fit so many models, that it's hard to know if a 25% spring is really 25% stiffer than the one you have now, or is it stiffer than the one in a different model that takes a spring of the same dimensions.

Simple, huh?
