Slippery tires?
« on: April 09, 2020, 09:40:31 PM »
Long story short I've had a couple incidents, one of which made sense, slipping on fresh asphalt that had not been rained on yet, and it was pouring rain.  But the other, that happened yesterday, blew my mind. I was crossing over concrete in a parking lot and was blown sideways by the wind, like straight sideways. It only moved me an inch, but I couldn't believe it. It was just starting to rain, but even if it was pouring I wouldn't expect such a thing. In fact, since I'm a newb to riding, I Googled about riding in the rain, and found many people enjoy it and it's not a big deal. Well I'm scared of the wind/rain now for sure.

Could it be my tires? 2019 Kymco Super 8. They look slippery but most motorcycle tires look that way to me.

Regarding your stock tires - Most manufacturers do not put homicidal tires on scooters, per se, but -- except for Vespa using Michelin City Grips on their new scoots - many scooters are issued with tires which can be easily improved upon....let's put it that way.

Wet roads require one's full attention -- think of the size of your tire contact with Mother Earth down there....now add some water and economy tires.
With experience you will become more comfortable riding in rain, and wind. Take you time. Practice in safe areas!

Yeah..What Stig said ever so politely.
I will note that SYM did indeed put nigh homicidal tires on my HD stock...City Grips were worth every dime, including the price jump this year."

I think what happened here is when it first started to rain those oils and other fluids that have been sitting on the concrete from other vehicles come up to the surface and mix with the rain causing a slippery surface.
