Code 33 DT300i
« on: August 01, 2019, 10:14:54 PM »
I am putting this here in Tech because it applies to every EFI bike in the inventory. Not the code but the cause. Was held up on two trips because of a CELP (check engine light) Code 33 which is faulty injector. The ohms on the injector was within spec and the engine ran so I concluded it was a bad connection issue. Now nearly every connector has been treated with silicone dielectric grease. I thought that was done but  I guess this machine was confused with the first one. This is a recommendation to bite the bullet when you get a new or used EFI bike to treat every connector with that dielectric grease! At least every connector associated with the throttle body and ECU. That computer is constantly monitoring many factors when running and the currents are so small that any change in resistance both lights up the CELP and could shut you down. Think of it as trip preparation!

Got the Code 33 again! Oh, well...must be either an intermittent in the injector or the wiring. More later...

Curses! Outsmarted, again!

Found it! OK, troops, listen up! Armed with tools, light, podcast radio, sweatband, wiring diagram found that the fuel injector is fine but the fuel pump relay was intermittent. No fuel pump relay, no power to either fuel pump or injector so the ECU sees no current to injector, therefore Code 33. Will follow this up with anticipated nightmare of obtaining relay.....oh, yeah, the drawback of the radio was I could not hear whether the pump was running or not. Knowing that would have shortened trouble shooting.

I will tell you what I am NOT gonna do and that's pay no 26 to 28 bucks for a 12 volt SPST relay! Kymco part#38500-KHD8-90A goes for that all over! Kiss my grits! I will use a locally available IN STOCK auto parts 12 volt SPDT chinese relay for five bucks and rig it in there! More later...

By the way, the service manual says nothing about the fuel pump relay as a possibility....

Now I remember making a universal relay. It's just a SPST 4 pin relay in a relay socket. Then crimp male spade terminals on the bare wires of the socket and insert the spade terminals into the relay socket you want to replace.

For the Kymco 12V 8A relay the copper terminals are the output. The other 2 silver terminals are the input coil/trigger.

And that is just what I did, mouse! Had a trailer light harness been in the junk for a coupla years, 16 gage four separate colors and made one of your "adapter harness" with four 1/4" spades on one end and four female on the other. Worked like a champ! Now, I can get back to riding and evaluating that car tire on the rear!
