Windshields again
« on: September 07, 2019, 02:08:16 PM »
Seeking buffet free ride---on 11th new maxi scooter since 1990----all have same problem.....you nose is too far from tip of shield- --I  always try---$300 extra invested in XTown 300i so far---Puig Touring screen cut 4 inches (for see over) Laminar Lip bolted on ---kinda ok but screen got cracked in gas station tip over----so back to stock with Laminar Lip tried in 2 different positions----lowest kinda ok and I may live with it.

Fussy on ride comfort---my base line for no buffeting---BMW air cooled twin with Heinrich handlebar shield and lowers---my new '66 Harley big twin with winter windshield and tin leg shields and Vespa 2 stroke with shield cut to right, look over height.

I wear 3/4 helmet, safety glasses, long helmet bill, ear plugs----I need 2 lb helmet----neck injury, deer strike in Switzerland about 1990.   Really face shields can confuse me as I like to see what I might hit.

Too bad manufacturers do not test their products for long ride comfort.

Not sure exactly what you're asking.  Are you looking for a windshield?

There is no real windshield solution for XTown 300i----your nose is simply too far from tip of shield-----basic design of scooter.   Maxi scooter I have owned best windshield solution was for Honda 600 Silverwing, the Givi adjustable screen.

Decent wind management is important for those who ride a lot and have experience with other bikes with systems that work.

Adding to this----I am now using standard shield with holes drilled for Laminar Lip, both high and low----experience right now is Lip mounted about 1/2 inch above tip of shield---I find this better than lip 3 inches above the standard shield top edge-----air riding behind is less turbulent than with lip higher.
AND of course I look over as I like to see what I might hit!

This guy does his own windshield test to combat buffeting.

Because of your experience, you may not find any value in his test results, but I do like his method of visualizing the wind around him on a ride. He fixes tinsel (yes, the same stuff you hang on Christmas trees) to his windshield and records how they react at several speeds and with slight modification.

Results are what I am interested in------stuff that works.   While living/working in Germany I bought  new BMW R80RT in 83/84----windshield/protection not perfect then I noticed the R80RT police bikes had slightly different windshields.....the people who ride 8 hrs a day in their work must have complained!
