12v power outlet fuse
« on: March 05, 2016, 06:23:52 PM »
I blew the fuse in the 12v power outlet so have taken off the front to change it.

I am faced with the following (see photo).
How do I go about changing the fuse - to be clear I have no idea how to proceed!

I think the fuse may be in the black piece connecting to the red wire but not sure how to dismantle to reveal the blown fuse.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello zenith9, you're right, that is the fuse holder, I think it is a 'push together and turn anti clockwise '
The fuse in there is a 0.8amp, I swapped mine to a 5amp, 0.8 is no good for anything IMHO!
Others may beg to differ.
Wait and see what other replies you get.
Cheers,
Don.

Thanks a million for your reply, that worked a treat!
I have the fuse out now.

I was thinking of replacing with 3amp, as per advice on a previous topic on this forum.

I just need to charge phone/GPS off it. It worked fine for phone but I managed to blow it using a small 12v powered air compressor.

when I changed the fuse in my downtown,  I installed a dash mounted fuse holder beside the plug, and installed # 10 wire from the battery, now I can change the fuse easy,  for anything I want to plug in,.  and not worry about over-loading the wires,

  checking amp loading of wires ,    # 10 wire 15 amps,     #12 wire  9.3 amps,    #14 wire  5.9 amps,   #16 wire  3.7 amps   #18 wire  2.3 amps,   #20 wire  1.5 amps,  #26 wire .36 amps,

these measures are under load at 12 volts,  for steady  flow,.   now if you use metric wire measures the numbers are thickness of wires in MM.s     I don't know these!  only know SAE numbers,.

Air pump ... blew the fuse ... horrible location for a fuse.

I removed the glass fuse and replaced it with a 7.5 amp blade fuse 'inside' the storage pocket.  I also wired in my Garmin power/cord to the same circuit and now the Garmin wire goes across to the wire loom and underneath the center handlebar plastic.  I screwed a Garmin knob mount to the center of the handlebar.   Works better in this location, I don't get GPS vision zone out and my body shadows the screen better so I can see it in the sun.

Like de dee, mine is wired direct from battery with a 20 amp fuse which may be a bit large for the run back to front with #12 red insulated primary wire. Did that because of after market horn installed. Just hooked the outlet to same wire so I could charge the battery through the outlet. I could use an air pump now if I had one!

Probably for a short while...it is pretty small. That's why I ran a wire from the battery. De dee has a pretty good chart to follow that is based on electrical standards. Those standards will practically guarantee your wire won't get so hot the insulation melts off....

the wire on my 300 downtown is a # 18 or 20 ,.  that's why I went to a # 10 wire, for 7.5 to 10 amp fuses

The original fuse is a M205 glass type with a 500mA rating or so. At 12 volts this is less than 6 watts of power, which is enough to slow-charge a phone. You can always run a slightly larger fuse (e.g. 1 amp) so it doesn't blow again.

This issue is solved in the DT350i model as there is a USB charger with no fuse at all.
