Scoot stopped while riding
« on: March 09, 2020, 07:28:28 AM »
Scoot died on me in the middle of the road last week. Luckily I was going downhill, so coasted to the first bus stop.
Lights were on, the engine was turning.
Took the cover to see the spark plug. The connector was off, and the plug was loose???

Didn't touch the plug since it was put in last Summer.

Unscrewed the plug completely (hot!  ;D), and it looked ok, light brown color.

Screwed it back in, connector on, has to fire up immediately, right?
Well...no... :-\

Out of ideas at the time, and no tools, left it there, and called a friend with a van to pick it up and bring it home.

The next day took the Tupperware off and  put in a new plug just to be sure. Didn't start.

Checked the fuel flow, and it was ok. The engine was turning so it had to be something electrical.

Had an ignition coil at hand, so tried changing that. Fired right up!

Couldn't see anything unusual on the faulty coil, but it wasn't working.

Can't find a connection between the loose plug, plug connector being off, and coil failing at the same time. Anybody have an idea?

Since the plastics were off also did a valve check.

Hi Jeeves,

Was is that orange coil that failed? I used to sell those - they were notoriously rubbish.

I think the loose plug and cap were just incidental!

Yes, the orange one failed. In my defense I ordered it from eBay in the wee morning hours during my night shift. Seemed like a good idea at the time [emoji16][emoji111]

I was expecting at least 3hp more. 1 just because of the orange racing color [emoji16]
