There are reports of requiring 100 psi to get the beads to seat and even a few highr than that. I recall reading that one guy quit trying when the pressure got near 150! However, I also read accounts that "assembly lube" is real imprtant and reports that using what the pros use and dish detergent (which I used) work about the same. Most of the riders using car tires mount their own because most tire shops won't touch a mount of a car tire on a bike rim because of insurance fears. Most of these guys diy report 50 to 60 psi required to seat the bead and that is what it took for me to do it. Most of the posted values on darkside.nwff.info are less than 100 psi. So far in over 20 years of recorded darkside practice there are NO recorded disasters attributed to this practice. There are NO NTSB reports found of two wheel crashes that are related to darkside practice. Most darksiders are tourers that do not drag knees and elbows in turns. As far as I am concerned, all the talk about fires, crashes and skids as well as bead fit/non-fit are scare tactics to discourage the darkside practice and all by people who have NEVER TRIED IT!
I was told in the 60's by a U of Kansas Aerospace Engineering councellor/professor that all emphasis was on space travel and besides, all low speed aerodynamics had been developed. I knew then that this "acedemic engineer" was full of hot air! His proclamation was before human powered flight, flight around the world on one tank of gas and the huge-est aircraft ever built to lift rockets all flew. This ignores the astounding solar powered craft that flew around the world at about 35 miles per hour! So, you see, I really am not impressed by degrees in anything and not really discouraged by negative people nor aircraft mechanics fresh out of A&P school.
