Weak starter?
« on: November 01, 2019, 09:51:48 AM »
I have this problem that when I try to start my like 200i, the engine turns a little and then stops. Then I release the start button and try again and sometimes it starts the second time, but if it's cold I have to do this more times up to five times.

Is this normal or shouldn't my starter keep turning, when I push the engine. I fear in cold times or low battery, it will get hard to get the scooter starter.

Allready changed the starter solenoid. And former owner, said he changed the battery, but it did not change the starter situation.

So I'm able to scoot, but would be nice to fix it before it gets worse and I'm stuck somewhere.

New starter engine or any other ideas?

Kindly Jesper

Depending where you are----in US try your dealer, if no dealer remove battery, take to Batteries Plus have charged and load tested, replace battery if necessary-------AND scooters/bikes not ridden a lot of any distance seem to have battery problems-----my cure, at least 3 times a week 10-20 miles at highway speeds.

The LIKE200i is quite famous for its super quick starts in all temps - including VERY cold! - even with the stock 8Ah battery

(would be nice to have some more info on your scoot when problems are posted: year, miles, recent repairs, wrecks, ? etc.)

So, I am very suspect of your battery. EFI likes a nice healthy battery. Judging by a decade of reports here, Starters on the LIKE200i are fine. Not at all a weak point in the starting system....unless very sorely abused (like any starter)
I'd certainly try a "known" good battery before purchasing any more parts for your LIKE200i - seller saying battery is good is not much of a guarantee..

When you do replace your battery - think about stepping up to something more than the stock 8 or 9Ah stock battery.
(10, 12, or 14AH)
I have great starts with my LIKE200i - always - and have for 7 years. I did ride my LIKE200i on the highway once, for 15 mins - about 5 years ago.
It is not necessary on your scooter. Ride it normally, put it on a battery tender if it's going to sit for more than a few days.

More $ spent on a better and stronger battery won't make your scooter run any better - but it sure as H will give you a smile when you hit the start button - miles from home on a cold day!

If your otherwise healthy LIKE won't start & run properly with a new, better, (and yes - more $$ - but less than a tow!) battery - then you might want to think about getting your charging system checked.

Check your starter ground, mine was loose and would intermittently crank slow. Finally found the problem when the bolt fell out and wouldn't crank.

Finally got time right back on this one.

Fixed it by first testing if battery was the problem by connecting it to my car with startcables.

The problem was gone, so yes a new battery did the trick.

Thank you all for helping with advise.

"Badda-Bing!"
Slow starter on otherwise healthy LIKE200i = dumb battery. Period. Full stop.
Your good description of its behavior was the key.

Folks, don't buy parts, or trust "previous owner" without giving us a shot at helping you.
Thanks for the post!

Boy, that's the truth! A one-time Like owner, they just seem all of a sudden, running smoothy after touching start button! That is the normal. Any deviation is indicating a problem.
