Why people do not ride or have not ridden a lot in past
« on: August 06, 2020, 05:13:24 PM »
Thinking about why people do not ride or have not ridden a lot in past.  #1 time...having to work  #2 money usually related to being married  #3 little interest....and as we get older....never done it before.

I am blessed, first 12 years in Air Force, worked scheduled year in advance 6 days on 3 off---single, stationed in interesting place (Europe/Asia) lots of time to ride.  Once in awhile we would get in a member of the married mafia( as leader that run the military) who thought single people had too much time off.  Idiot.  USAFSS schedule proven that anymore time on the machines we did, could drive you NUTS!  Later the 30 days off leave invited lots of riding.

Same married mafia didn't like motorcycles and made rules to make it hard to own and ride bike---these are the guy, who when they retire get a riding mower as Mama will not let then have bike.

Later retiring after 20 years/worked by Army and USMC for 30 years---best USMC, Safety Manager USMCA Iwakuni---lived in Field Grade BOQ---had 2 maids, one to clean up, the other to wash clothes and pick up beer cans.   Brought my Helix in during storms.  We had own mild porn channel, too. The govt. vacation and work schedule very generous-----lots of riding time.

And of course have always used my bike/scooter as prime transport---almost any weather.  I like it.

Myself I've rode since 8 years old. Grew up on dirt bikes and rode winter and summer. Fast foward to career had pleanty of money but no time. I had a new BMW bike  that I sold 4 years after I bought it with 1250 miles on it. Same with boat did not get used so I sold both. During work the boss would let us put in as many hours as we wanted. I worked a lot of 80 hour weeks and a few 120 hour weeks. I didn't have a life outside of work. I had a chance to retire at 55 and didn't look back.  I get to ride now and have been enjoying not having shift work or the stress involved with work. Now my friends are starting to retire from their careers so we are planning get togethers (guess who will furnish the scooters) . The sad part is there are a few friends that never made it to retirement.  I know my riding days are numbered so I'm trying to make the most of them.
In parts 200S and Grand Vista and my motorcycles 2 CS BMW'S and one GS BMW.

Sold-32 Kymco scooters of various sizes this summer.

You’re right with #1 John.  Finding the time to ride is always a challenge! I was fortunate to have a job where I could not only commute by bike, but also do a lot of the travelling involved by bike too. It took a bit of forward planning and innovative luggage, but well worth it to see the length and breadth of the country by bike.  I reckon I’ve now ridden more miles on two wheels during my life than I ever have driven on four!
