Finding proper helmet fit!
« on: August 20, 2020, 09:02:06 PM »

There are a lot of videos on how to get the proper fit when purchasing a new helmet.
Please refer to a few of them to get the best advice from the pros.
The bottom line is - you must try on various helmets in a shop - and then wear them around the store for 15>20 mins to see if your snug helmet has any "hot" spots....pressure areas causing discomfort.

A couple of pros advise finding the smallest helmet which seems to fit - then trying one size smaller!

In any event - you can't just use a tape measure and a mail-order site to get 'safest' proper fitting helmet.
And be aware that some manufacturers actually make different sized shells for different sized heads - rather than just one shell with more or less padding to fit the rider.

There are also sites to check the safety rating of helmets.

Be safer ….get a proper fitting helmet!

As user of at least 2 new Helmets a year, like comfortable all day fit and lighter weight (bad neck), BSc Safety Degree holder----I find once you find brand that fits, stick with it---right now GMAX works for me---white 3/4 size small @ around $40.    Have had expensive brands in past---Schubert=heavy, stunk from glue smell its entire life.   I feel old brain can only stand not big bump anyway.   Better work on riding technique to avoid accidents, falls in my world.

I find white nice color for helmet.

John I have found the Gmax GM 32  3/4 helmet works well for me as well and have several in medium size in different colors to match the different Kymco's . They are comfortable with good air flow and you can get replacement pads for the inside.  I consider them a bargin at around $70. I take it you use the GM 2 model based on the price?

I use the $40 helmet because they work for me.....take my long bill visor, are simple, no add on's---I throw them away when they are dirty/stink/had hard drop, etc.

a couple decades ago, when I bought my first Arai  helmet, I was properly fitted, the sales guy explained the process, and after we determined head shape, and cheekpad thickness, he had me walk around the store 15-20 minutes.  I don't get buying used helmets, would you buy someone's used underwear ?

Jay Leno did a good vid on helmet fitting

Like you Randy, really grateful to have received professional advice (again from an Arai guy) early on in my motorcycling career. Good fit is everything in the unhappy event of a get off!  I’ve had two at high speed, once with an Arai, once with a Dainese helmet; both times the lid was scraped, but I got up and walked away.

I started riding a Honda 50 step through in 1966.  Who knew about helmets.  I stopped riding for a while, and started again in the late 70's.  I wore what was probably the only major brand available at the time... a Bell.  That lasted for a while until I got my first BMW.  Then for years, I wore several BMW (now Schubert) full face modular helmets, but the price of Schuberts today is outrageous.  I wound up wearing Shoei's for a few years, again full face, modular.  Very comfortable.  I'm now wearing an HJC full face modular, which I really like.  Don't remember the model name off hand, but it has this slick dark visor that you can slide down the face shield if you're in bright sun.  I bought this online, but I tried the helmet on at a motorcycle shop before buying it online.  Did I feel guilty about doing that?  Not at all since I spent a ton of money at that shop having my Beemer serviced.  I also bought an Olympia jacket from the shop, so I didn't have any qualms about the helmet.

As a retired MSF instructor, I always taught my students to get the best helmet they could afford, and try it on and wear it in the shop for a good while.  Like the old saying goes, if you've got a $10 head, wear a $10 helmet.

Sales girl at my dealer kept trying to stuff my XXXXL head into helmets that didn't fit - then said, "after-all, it's only a scooter!"
Bought 3 bikes and assorted gear off of them - but by da_n once the owner's wife properly fitted me with a 4XL HJC modular - which I wore for 20mins in the shop- I thanked her and bought it from Amazon. Nice white one.

Bought a 3XL 'large shell' Nolan modular with Xmas bonus these days. I'm OK with its price - as it's the only head I was issued.

I've already stated I ware a Gmax 3/4 on the scooters but on the BMW'S  I have Shoei and  HJC full face because of lack of a usable windscreen and I tend to ride the bikes faster.
In parts 200S and Grand Vista and my motorcycles 2 CS BMW'S and one GS BMW.
