SatNav/Smartphone Mount
« on: September 14, 2020, 11:30:16 AM »
Morning Chaps and chapesses.

So the other month I bought a mirror ram mount for my waterproof iphone attachment so I can have satnav capability whilst riding. Whilst it worked okay-ish, it was far from perfect for a number of reasons:

- as it was on a long ram extender, the vibration was somewhat annoying.
- occasionally, the mount would work a bit loose/sloppy and the phone position would shift making it impossible to see the screen.
- the phone obscured my dash
- I had to take my eyes off the road too far to look at the screen.

Not very ideal you'll agree I'm sure.  A better arrangement was necessary so I immediately thought about the accessory "shelf" I made from aluminium for my old RT11100 tourer.  I thought about a similar arrangement but after further cogitation, a more simple approach was arrived at,

I removed the front end of the scoot, and then machined a flat chunk of ally which was then drilled and tapped so I could mount a RAM panel mount securely to the top of the instrument binnacle. The existing RAM extension piece and iPhone enclosure was recycled and a new Ultimate addons charger was also installed.

The finished articles now mean that I can safely and securely view my satnav on my phone screen at the right height without obscuring the instruments and without taking my eyes off the road.  I've replaced the thumbscrew on the ram extender with a stainless locknut instead which I can nip up much tighter.  It works well.

Pics of the final result attached.

nice job...looks great!  I know what you mean about the vibration. I have a RAM mount on my handlebars on my motorcycle and there's no vibration at all but if I tried it on my scoot it would probably shake loose and fall off!
