LIKE 200i transmission overhaul
« on: January 06, 2021, 12:29:56 PM »
Christmas time is different this year, we can't go anywhere, so it's the scooter who has to suffer.

Like the title says, l did an transmission service because there was some light axial play in the sprockets when l was pushing the rear wheel fore and back. I had a spare gear at hand, so it went easily.
Since during my CVT adventure the cover and belt were off anyway....
Once the gear bell was off, even the present bearings and oilseals didn't show any remarkable sign of play or wear, l replaced them with new ones.
Taking out old bearings from motorside and gear bell has to be done by heating both alumimium cast parts pretty much up to 150° C for this bearings are shrunken in.
(oil smokes up at this temp)
Apply a good bearing puller before you start heating with a heat gun. Tension the puller and a light tap with an hammer, and out they come. Installing is reverse, heating the seats, freezing the bearing and they drop in..
Since my shop did not have the gasket on stock, l had to make it by myself...
Minimal play now on my gear sprockets.

Pics indicate size of bearings according to standarts and oilseals size in mm. All spares where less than €70,-. Inclusive 200ml SAE90 gear oil.
So you see how nice Christmas even with COVID restrictions can be
Happy and safe scootering, Ruffus

nice work, Ruffus! Can you remind us how many miles or kilometers are on your scoot? How much free play did you have in the back? Did you happen to measure the excess movement of your rear drive axle?

I'm asking because when I've removed my rear tire I have noticed a slight amount of free play in my rear axle (and my People S200 shares the same transmission / final drive with your 200i).

@lawhawk,
..this scoot has 48.000 km on its odo.
And yes, l had at the tire-spokes ends about 3cm of play, which is now reduced to appr. 1cm if you move the wheel fore and back. Was not that bad without any  lateral movement, but as l said a spare and time was there...
Have to say, the spare gear was a used one from an LIKE 125s MY 2012 with 24.000 kms.

Ruffus, is that large movement measurement taken with the scoot all together or did you remove the exhaust side swingarm? With my wheel removed I can move the driveshaft a little...with my scoot all put together the exhaust side swingarm prevents any front to back or up and down wheel movement.

@lawhawk
The measurement was done:
-scoot on mainstand
-all pieces( wheel, muffler, axle, etc)
mounted
- me on my knees
If you look from the muffler side, and move the rearwheel fore-aft, where the spokes meet the rim
it was a move of appr. 3 cm (wheel turned that much on it's axle) no play in the axle, only in the transmission sprockets.
- after gear revision only 1cm
Hope it helped.

thanks, Ruffus, that makes sense. Moving the wheel fore and aft looking for play..your 3 cm of movement (1.18 inch) is huge! I understand why you'd want to replace some components!

I'd like to ask if noise from like in the video
is transmission or gear related?
i only hear it during low rpm or when slowly moving the motorcycle by feet.

im just gonna go the have it service just to be sure.

@lahawk,
I went out to my storage and tried to figure out the rear wheel axle's AXIAL  movement on my spare gear.
When the wheel and swingarm (muffler/brake support) are removed, there is at the end of this pinion (where usually the 24mm wheelnut sits) a free play of 1mm(one) to all sides (fore, aft, up, down).  It's explainable to me, because it is a long lever, sits in a ball- bearing and has some wear and tear after many kms.
But there is NO lateral (pushing in and out into the gear) to feel, means it's still good but only worn out on the sprockets shoulders a little. With the swingarm mounted it sits anyway in this arms bearing again and held tight.
I would not worry too much about wear and tear of our transmissions. Material and OEM bearings seem to be posh. Change the gear oil once in a while, refill with max. 200ml SAE 80-90 oil and it will last forever.

yes, Ruffus, that is the play I was originally referring to. Thank you for your pictures and detailed explanations.

@Stig thank you!
YES, you are right 200ml is too much for just an oilchange. Might be blown out into our airfilter.
