When will we see a break in car prices - new & used?
« on: September 02, 2021, 11:11:22 PM »
This is the year we've been looking at buying a car for the daughter for her college commutes.
Looks like we couldn't have picked a worse year.

"Chips" aren't available - and built cars are waiting on them.
Son in law is down to 4 days at the Honda plant. (from 6 two years ago)
Used cars are fetching stupid prices.
Car lots, new & used, look nearly empty.

A scooter for her is not an option. 33 mile commutes to school on the interstate are NOT going to happen on any scooter. Not is this part of Ohio.

Is a change coming?

And, I'm feeling a little peculiar.

They say used car prices are starting to drop, haven't been in the market. I think it will take a long time to normalize if it ever goes back. Have you cruised around the neghborhood? Some times you can find good deals from private individuals. Especially if you can find one from a old couple they tend to be low milage and  some times they have service records
In parts 200S and Grand Vista and my motorcycles 2 CS BMW'S and one GS BMW.

Sold-32 Kymco scooters of various sizes this summer.

I’ll let you know Stig. We’re just thinking we need to upgrade daughter’s Audi for something a bit newer...

I think the short answer is "no time soon." I just saw this week more major factory shutdowns from the big automakers. So, chip supply remains constrained and new vehicle production will lag demand at least into mid-2022 at this point, I'd have to imagine.

My father-in-law is a used car dealer. He said he has seen some moderation at wholesale auctions in used car prices, but you're probably looking at more of a leveling off than any really noticeable reduction in prices.

As another poster noted, a "private sale" is almost always the way to the best deal on a used vehicle (two or four wheeled), as long as you feel comfortable evaluating it and buying with no warranty or service department willing and able to stand behind the sale.

Patience, of course, is also key. If you have a budget and cash in hand, I'd say watch the Facebook Marketplace (I know you don't have it, but I imagine your daughter does) DAILY and be ready to pounce when the right vehicle pops up. Good deals don't last long on such platforms.

About a month ago, I received an email from my dealer's used vehicles manager as king if I'd be interested in trading in my 2019 for a new Mazda. They're getting a LOT of demand for used vehicles.
