Scorched Odor with new scooter
« on: October 28, 2010, 12:46:26 AM »
When I got my new Grand Vista 250, it had only a few miles from being on the sales lot.
It is my 1st new scooter (ie CVT transmission).

At first, when I would ride it 20 miles or so, it had a scorched odor to it in the rear area.
I assumed it was because it was new  (muffler paint ?)

Now, with 100 miles on it, the odor is much reduced,
but I got to worrying if the odor might indicate a problem.

So, the questions:

Do new CVT bikes stink when ridden duing the first 100 miles ?
Is the belt adjusted wrong and scorching itself when ridden ?

Otherwise, I really like this scooter.

Scoot Safely,

It is probably just like you said paint and lubricants burning off , but you got a two year warrenty , so let the dealer know in an e-mail and request response . Good luck .

Hey, and welcome, MaryK.   :)  I do believe that odor is perfectly normal.  I bought a used scooter with a new muffler guard on it which smelled like that for many hundreds of miles.  Finally went away.  Mines an Xciting 500, 2007 model.

I REALLY like the looks of the Grand Vista!  Congratulations!

Probably it was only a thin coating for conservation. Kymco does a much better job there than Piaggio (rusting already in the showroom).
The only scooter specific CVT usually doesn't smell - or it is already too hot and damaged.

With 100 miles on it now, any problem causing a smell would have manifested itself in a serious mechanical way I would think.
