I commuted to work on my LIKE200i at 5°F
« on: December 20, 2021, 03:44:07 PM »
I used my Kymco to commute to work here in Ohio for a few years.
With a clear forecast, and no salt on the roads - I set off for work that morning - mildly concerned about two things.

One - my corneas, since i like to keep my face shield cracked open a 1/2 inch when riding.

And two - the plastic of this scooter on this crazy ride.... "Am I going to hit a bump and this thing'll shatter under me like a glass bowl?!"

Well, my eyes survived and the panels didn't shatter.

And, I'm feeling a little peculiar.

Back in Jr high as soon as I hit 14 I got my restricted license.  I rode my Yamaha 250 Enduro to school during the winter including on solid ice. Snow wasn't as precarious because you could get traction until it was packed. When I got my first car ( Buick Wildcat) the Yamaha went to recreational use then sold.
In parts 200S and Grand Vista and my motorcycles 2 CS BMW'S and one GS BMW.

Sold-32 Kymco scooters of various sizes this summer.

While I was still working I was also commuting to work on my bike every day the roads were clear. A co-worker in my department would also ride 50 miles one way to work on his BMW for many years so that he and I were the only riders during the coldest days of the year. One year he stopped riding when it was cold so I asked him why. He said the plastic on his BMW was prone to the tabs breaking from being cold and brittle. I think it was more likely he had tried to do maintenance on his bike and broke the tabs taking those panels off. Yes, the cold does make the plastic panels stiffer and less flexible. But the plastic that is used to make body panels is VERY flexible to begin with, just less so in the cold. I've learned that if you don't pull off panels when they are cold then there is no problem. The normal shocks of riding will not be an issue. I've never had an issue with that since I started riding in sub-zeroF temps back in 2005. And all my bikes since 2001 were fully clothed in plastic (GW, Burgman 650, ST, CTX, Burgman 650, AK). Most years I'd be commuting several mornings at temps from -10F to -2F so I think if there would be a problem I'd have at least a few just from riding. I say there's no issue to worry about. Just avoid pulling off panels when they are cold.

As to your eyes...
Yeah, my eyes would tear up sometimes if I left my visor cracked open at near zeroF temps. I used to open my visor to avoid fogging due to the cold but from my co-worker I adopted an idea. I made a snorkel from a small nylon plumbing ribbed elbow and slipped on a short length of vinyl clear tube. I cut the clear tube to be right at the bottom edge of my full face helmet on one side and hold the elbow between my teeth on that side to hold it in place. I ONLY exhale through this snorkel and inhale through my nose while riding. This totally prevents fogging of my glasses and draws in fresh air as well. I have a Pin-Lock visor so that doesn't fog up anyway but that doesn't help my glasses. I rinse this snorkel out after every ride. Been using it for the last 10 years with great success. I almost never ride with my visor open any more when riding in the cold.

That's a very good idea this anti-fog snorkle !!!
I'm going to make one very soon as it is cold and humid here and will certainly report

The coldest I have ridden in was around 15 degrees.  That was plenty cold for me.

Regarding the snorkel idea, I'm sure Arai used to market one which fixed to the inside of the chin bar.  I used mine for years and you could seal your mouth around it and blow out to exhale, the breath "exhaust" carried away below the helmet leaving your visor unfogged!  As you say Hawk, Genius.

Edit:  Looks like the technology has moved on from my old rectangular breath box:  https://www.ebay.co.uk/b/Arai-Breath-Guards-Helmet-Parts/177084/bn_38670271

Neil - interesting..I followed the link and saw the Arai version. I did a search for one for my Shoei RF1200 and the breath guard that popped up is the piece that's already in my helmet..the rubber piece with the bump up for your nose right behind the visor. I know in theory that's a breath guard...but it doesn't really do squat to help prevent fogging. Maybe it's worse without it in the helmet but it isn't anything like the breathguard you're referring to.

A pinlock combined with some sort of breath exhaust device could really solve a lot of cold weather fogging problems.

Exactly that. Both work great together.

One reason a breath guard doesn't work in my helmets (had one in the past) is that I also wear a Turtle Fur pull over neck gator that almost totally blocks air escaping out the bottom of the helmet and preventing the breath guard from working as intended. So instead exhaled air blows up in front of my face. The snorkel overrides that issue entirely and is simple as well as being very cheap to make.

That neck gator keeps my neck warm, especially in some of the temps I ride in like below zeroF, and it also keeps the cold air from blasting my chin. My wife bought me the Turtle Fur gator almost 15 years ago I think. I bought her one maybe 6 years ago to keep her neck warm when she goes walking outside.
