Bad Day at Blackrock~! -- anniversary
« on: March 29, 2022, 03:02:06 PM »

March 2015, nice sunny & warm ride out for coffee at Yellow Springs. Took the longest way home that morning.
Ran over a piece of sheetmetal which sliced my Forza's rear Dunlop tire. 3" piece  of folded sheetmetal got me...
thought it was a flattened pop can coming at me. Front tire stood it up to slice into center of rear tire.
1/8th mile later I realized something was very wrong.

I learned 2 things that morning:
1) my AAA recovery ins. does not cover "recreational vehicles"
2) Honda brought to America a scooter which has a uniquely sized rear tire.

The tow to the dealer, new (over-sized*) tire & installation was expensive > @$500.

* that slightly wider tire actually zeroed my speedo! It was no longer reading %10 fast....and I probably lost a bit of acceleration...but since I never ride WOT, I never noticed.
I also notice those nasty mirror extenders!...which means I had yet to discover that my son's Honda XB500 had the exact same mirrors but with a longer stem! I bought a set & tossed the ugly billet things. That was the final mod this scoot needed to my mind! PERFECT, now.

Just remembered a conversation I had with the guy from the towing co.
He asked where I'd been riding.
I told him.
"Steine road --- the intersection at the high school?"
"Yeah...I go through there every time."

He pointed to a bit of an oil slick on his flat-bed , and said it was from a motorcycle which he'd hauled from a fatal crash at that intersection 2 days ago. "Rider ran the stop sign."

I gear ya on AAA, I dropped them years back and just use road service thru my insurance company.  Much cheaper and better coverage !!  The only thing I dont get is free maps!!  But for the miney saved, I can buy lots of maps!! For kess than 100 per year, both vehicles, my motorhome, boat, and even my SxS offroad vehicle has road hazard....towing, out of gas, flat tire, etc up to 50 miles, much further than AAA.  Check your ins out....

Motorcycles are covered by AAA through their RV policy. A slight increase in price but if not mistaken gives you 200 miles of free towing. My insurance agent was not able to source comparable coverage.

That has changed then, my AAA only gives 8 miles free then a fee for extra miles. On my motorhome... aAA covers nearest dealer/ truck shop only but my own ins covers 250 miles.  Must be the state you live in !!
