2022 KYMCO AK550 gas gage
« on: July 31, 2022, 09:55:31 PM »
Twice now the gas gage started blinking red indicating I needed gas. Filled up and noticed I had almost 2 gals left. That's over a 100 miles of traveling left. Only thing I can think of to do is rely on Trip A. Any suggestions!

In my motorized vehicles, I always use a trip meter to track miles since filling the tank. For your AK550, if you are referencing the red bar blinking, you could wait for the E to blink. Having been stranding for over 3 hours waiting for roadside service after running out of gas, I now refill much sooner of my scooter than I do on my car. I’d rather refill with a gallon in the tank than running out again. YMMV

Doing any GP cornering? Something to mislead the float?
Otherwise,  sounds like a faulty, or overly sensitive, gauge?

And, I'm feeling a little peculiar.

That's what I do... until I get accustomed to what the gas gauge is really showing me.
When you fill up are you just sticking the nozzle down into the tank and filling until it automatically shuts off?
If so, then don't do that. I find doing that the pump nozzle will shut off way before I come close to filling the tank. I always put just the bare end of the nozzle into the hole in the plate, just barely enough to hold it but no more. And then when it does shut off I look and maybe keep filling until the gas is level with that plate in the gas port.

Also, don't forget that the last red bar is not the only reminder of low gas. When that bar goes away the red "E" starts flashing and that is the real "get gas now" indicator. You should be able to get 35-40 miles on just the last bar, and then at least another 12-18 miles on the flashing red "E" before you risk going dry. I usually have about 1+ gallons left when the last red bar starts to flash. Maybe a bit more. Maybe there is variation in what the gas gauge is showing. That's why I always reset Trip A when I fill up and ride to 150 miles, sometimes 170 miles, before stopping for a fill up.

Trip A also controls the AVE MPG readout. Not that I pay much attention to the ave mpg number since that is way off like it is on most bikes I've owned. I've seen that show an average of over 65-75 mpg and when I calculate the miles per gallons used I get more like 53-58 mpg.

My Burgman 650 gas gauge was similar, seemed to show low gas when barely half a tank was left. So just use the Trip meter.

Very informative. I didn't know about the flashing E. I fill up the same way as you do Bob and MPG isn't even close. Always says 70 plus or minus. If Trip A is close to 175, I get some gas. At least 2 of the motorcycles I've had would let you know how many miles you had left and they were fairly accurate. With Noodoe installed, I thought maybe I would have that feature.

Hope I solved my backrest problem. Found an old Harley backrest. A welder is going to weld a small plate to it that will slide under the oem backrest. Something like 5 1/2 " wide by 6" long. Made a template and it slid underneath easily.

Just to restate what I've said in other places at other times. All the new bikes I've bought improved their mpg throughout the first several thousand miles. My CTX1300 was the last recent example. That bike went from initially barely 40 mpg if I was trying really hard to conserve to around 48-52 mpg by the time I tacked on 8000 miles. I bought it with 1 mile on the odometer. Since I bought my AK in November and the cold season was fast approaching I didn't expect a lot for mpg. I do ride all year, even in temps below zeroF. I have found that at below freezing temps the mpg drastically drops on any bike I've owned by as much as 10-12%. Colder is lower mpg of course. At near zeroF temps I would see a drop of at least 12%. Seemed to be rather consistent on that since every bike I've owned dropped the same.

But my main point here, after recovering from my rambling, is that from buying new any bike will improve mpg as that 1000 mile counter goes up.
