AK FUEL FILTER
« on: October 23, 2022, 09:44:41 PM »
Is there a fuel filter in our AK 550? I looked in the on line manual but did not see anything. Did I miss it? Thank you.

my guess, like many other fuel injected vehicles, it's part of the fuel pump assembly in the gas tank

BINGO!
It's a filter screen at the bottom of the fuel pump like most big FI bikes. And the fuel pump is a module that sits down inside the tank like all the bigger bikes I've owned, FI or Carb.
No mention of a filter in the service manual but the fuel pump details start on page 6-21 in the service manual and the filter screen is the disk that can be seen at the bottom of the pump assembly.

Yep. Little scoots with FI, too. Like with my Liberty and LIKE200I. On the end of the fuel pump,  in the tank. Looks like a tea bag🙃
Not much of a "service item".

And, I'm feeling a little peculiar.

On my V-strom, besides the screen, there is a real filter in the fuel pump, a popular mod, is to bypass the internal filter and add an inline filter,  the filter in the pump is rather expensive, I drilled a hole thru mine, and added a NAPA fuel injection (high pressure hi flow) filter, that cost less than $20 and can be replaced without removing and disassembling the fuel pump

Modifying the fuel pump in any way seems like way too much work IMO. I've never had filter issues with any bike I've owned. Though I've never owned a bike more than 50,000 miles. But up to that no issues ever. I'd say don't worry about the fuel filter and just ride.

my filter got clogged at about 75k, it was less work making the mod that replacing the filter, and a whole lot cheaper, a filter and a couple high pressure hose clamps = less than $30 vs  oem filter @ $300± and more work to replace, step by step instructions on v-strom forum

it will be some time before I hit that kind of mileage on my AK,
