New Tyre needed for my X-Town 300i?
« on: October 25, 2022, 01:14:44 PM »
I think it may be getting to that time again.  The front Michelin CG2 on my scooter has now done 6,500 hard miles and is beginning to show signs of wear although, to the naked eye, it still looks to have plenty of tread left.  The signs I am feeling are through the steering which now gets "squirrely" over white lines and a lack of "feel" on wet greasy roads when tipping it into bends.  In the past, both of these warning signs have been completely addressed by new rubber!

After 4,000+ out of the rear, I had hoped to get 8,000 out of the front given my motorcycle wear rate of 2:1 rears to fronts, but it seems the scooter ratio is going to be different. Maybe 3:2?

EDIT:  Jury is still out!  Before ringing up my tyre guy I thought "best just check the pressures first"...  Long story short, the rear needed a couple of psi, but the front was a good 8 or 9 psi light.  After confessing that on here, I need to take a ride tomorrow to see how the handling feels.  I'll post again with my findings.

Just completed a rear tire change on my Downtown 300i. It was the original tire, 4500 miles, and on there since 2016.

That's similar to what I've been getting on my rears Art.

Changed with tread right at the wear bars, could have gone a bit more, but the wet season is here.

OK Full disclosure time it was the low pressure all the time!  Embarrassed to report handling fully restored when I road tested the X-Town yesterday with a full complement of psi in both tyres!  I'll revisit the question of a replacement front when it's worn a bit more.  Who knows, I may yet hit the hoped for 2:1 ratio?

It's my thing. I run the psi right at or a few pounds under the recommended psi. I don't find any changes in handling, tire warms up better from the flexing, and ride is softer over rough roads.

That I can understand, but 9 psi was a bit too low and it certainly affected the handling Art!

I know Hawk, I know.  If you could see me now, I'm hanging my head in shame.  I really hate scrabbling around on the floor to get the connector onto the valve, even with the L-shaped valves, it's still a pig of a job.  At least one skinned knuckle is par for that course...

I hate checking and airing the tires at home!
Except!....when I parked my scoots in the warehouse at work. We had a big compressor and tank, with a long hose and gas station type fitting on the end. Press it on to fill. Check with the pencil gauge.....and done! Easy.

And, I'm feeling a little peculiar.
