NSR: R&R Equinox battery after sitting 2 years
« on: November 01, 2022, 08:39:22 PM »
Watched a couple of youtubes and visited my late FIL's garage to begin getting his car back on the road after sitting for a couple of years. (he gave up his keys after being hospitalized with a stroke and covid - not sure which came first. Wheelchair bound, then bed ridden where he passed several weeks later when I couldn't revive him with CPR while we waited for the squad)

Why did the car sit? My 94 yr old MIL did not want it touched during that period.
Now she wants to ride in it when I drive her to her Dr's appointments....so she passed my wife the title.

Bit of a bother with cold clips and very stiff cables - but needed only 10mm tools and popping out some scooter-like plastic rivets (!).
Off to the auto parts store for the biggest DieHard tomorrow. (if MIL will open the garage again?!?)
The battery showed 2.4V after it's hibernation.
No interest in trying to revive it - someone in the family will be driving it through another cold Ohio winter soon.

Much harder was replacing the batteries in the key fobs!
Seemed melted shut!

Will be interesting to see what needs doing after (if) it is started. A 2015 - looks pristine, as my FIL always kept it. No idea the mileage...until i get a battery in it.

Will report back - advice welcomed!

You on the right track, carry on! That Delco battery is guaranteed to be sulfated and is only good fore being a core fund-getter. I like the way you have "programmed" your meter for anticipated applications! Pliot's check list...works every time.

You may have ethanol snot to foul the injectors. The 90 psi fuel rail will be less affected than our 35 psi scoot EFI.

sounds like a fun project. Check for critters in the airbox...the gas could be a problem but fuel injected vehicles seem to do ok with older fuel. How much fuel is/was in the tank for the 2 year hibernation?

On really old cars that have been sitting you'll pull the plugs and squirt some oil down the holes...drain the fuel...check for spark....but on a newer car? You might be fine just putting in a new battery and turning the key!

Check the tire pressures, too...and the oil. Let us know how it goes.
