closest I've come to being hit....
« on: May 31, 2023, 06:32:21 PM »
....some have noticed that I take a lot of photos while standing in the roadways.
I know that I must be very aware of my surroundings as my hearing is compromised due to the helmet and earplugs.
After this morning - I see that I need to improve upon my situational awareness!

While taking photos in front of this pond.....

As I stepped forward for this one.....a navy blue P-up, without slowing, passed close behind me! Very close.

Maybe 100yrds up the road was a side street. I saw that the my road was empty, both directions, for a good distance.
He came out of the side road....in a hurry apparently.
I would never have driven at that speed, that near a pedestrian in the road.

OK, lesson learned.

PS: lots of cars pass me while I'm taking photos....in the dark, in the rain, etc. I always step off of the road into the weeds (snow, gravel, etc.) when a car is approaching. I also always illuminate the turn signal and brake light while parked.

And, I'm feeling a little peculiar.

Just have to pass on a good picture at times. To much traffic and not a good pull off.  I wonder why people are in such a hurry when driving through beautiful country.

We live on a road which is 30 mph outside the house, but then 60 mph 70 yds down the road.  The number coming past our drive like the proverbial bat outta hell is unbelievable!  It's a stretch we have to walk often with the dogs to access the field paths behind our house and the number of near misses we've had...

What's that old expression?  "Better five minutes late in this life than 5 years early in the next"?
Regards & ride safe,

funny that you post this...I just read your post on the '1st warm ride in some time'....and my first thought was that it appears very dangerous to be stopped in the middle of a highway taking pictures! I almost replied with that...and then read this one! People are crazy, distracted, etc....please be careful out there when stepping off your scoot!

in a career as a land surveyor, I've had plenty of near misses, the closest, was a long time ago, not a car full of nuns, a Caddy convertible and 4 elderly women. Sliding sideways toward me as I was standing at our total station, some 75 feet from the edge of the road, they came to a stop about 40 feet away, but one of the hub caps missed me by inches, The driver of the car gathered the hub cap and drove away as if nothing happened
