Wet weather riding

Caught out in a summer downpour yesterday. I’d forgotten that drawback to the open face helmet; even with fully closed visor I arrived at my destination with a soggy beard!

Still, I wasn’t cold and at least it washed the bugs out 🤣

I ride all year round to and from work. I do about 400km per week. This past year has been a pain as it rained all summer, and I’m talking torrential flood-inducing rain. Now in winter there's more rain and it's a lot colder. I’ve got the Scott Ergonomic Pro DP Rain Jacket and pants and they work pretty well, except for one small issue. Water seems to seep through the pants in the crotch area, so I will arrive mostly dry, but looking like I’ve pissed myself!

I’m guessing water pools on my seat and eventually makes its way through the material or seams of the pants. I’ve thought about getting better rain pants but this set rolls up nice and small when not in use and so it doesn’t take up much under seat storage. I’m thinking I’ll buy a can of waterproofing spray for material and spay the inside of the pants so I don’t keep looking like I’ve got an incontinence problem.

Nothing worse than a soggy gusset Beaker! Shop around as waterproof over trousers DO  exist.  I have some 20 year-old Baleno ones which still keep me dry and roll up to the size of a small beer can.

One, out of many, of the reasons I use a full face helmet.
I've been using Frogg Toggs for at least the last 18 years. Twice I wore out or stressed the pants enough that they would leak water in from that puddle on the seat. When that happened I replaced them and was back to dry. Tried the waterproofing silicon spray but that didn't work so replaced them. I like keeping my armored riding gear dry. Much more comfy that way.

I also ride all year and in all kinds of weather other than when it snows... usually. Twice, within 2 weeks, I did ride home from work when an unexpected snow storm hit. Was supposed to be sunny and 47F both times but ended up with big wet snow flakes starting to fall just as I walked out of the building at work. Ended up with 2 inches of heavy wet slush by the time I got home... Both times!

Yeah Frogg Togg rain over my Bullet riding pants.
HiViz overjacket from the U.K over armored FirstGear.....and a modular helmet....plus a scarf keeps my neck drier and warmer. I carry a spare - switch out for home ride.

I enjoy riding in the rain - have been known to seek out rainy sunrises for my coffee rides (though must tell my family, "well, it's just the luck of the draw!")
I buy the best tires I can find to replace the sketchy OEM's! and then ride like an adult.
