2 riders in a blinding summer downpour!
« on: July 25, 2023, 03:34:07 PM »
Yesterday evening I was out driving in my truck when the humidity and cloud cover finally let loose hail and THE hardest rain I've been in for years.
I could see maybe 2 car-lengths in front of me.....and in my mirrors I spotted two motorcycle headlights weaving & following me in this downpour!
I could not tell if they were sport riders or HD'ers, or even if they wore helmets.....about all I could see were their headlights.
Obviously - if they were on HD's then they were wearing their wife's scarf for head gear....but they do most often favor sunglasses.
So there was that.
Me?, I was looking for a tree to hide under from the hail.
Then it all quit. Very exciting for about 90 seconds! (in those 90 seconds we watched one pretty good wreck)

(My FIL was a fast driver. One time he brought his truck & trailer to pull home some trees I bought from a nursery. They were pretty much naked by the time he pulled into my drive :)
Another time he volunteered to drive us 50 mlles to the airport. It started THE heaviest rain ....and he liked to tuck his car right up under the rear bumpers of speeding semis! Visibility was minus 5 feet, at best, with the mist and winds. I was quietly pushing a hole in the floor from my passenger seat. Every so often one tail light would drift into view....2 feet ahead.
He wanted to get to the airport "early" - so we could have breakfast at a McDonalds. Between cutting our arrival too close this way and his speeding - I was ready for a pill., or a drink, or both! I told my wife - "never again!"

And, I'm feeling a little peculiar.

I recall riding back from Italy 20-odd years ago and 15 miles from home hitting conditions like that.  I was following my wife in her LR Discovery loaded up with luggage and kids!  I wondered if I was going to finish those last few miles and it was not pleasant.  Happy to say on that stretch the ol' Daytona never missed a beat.
Regards & ride safe,
Neil
