Temperamental start fuel injected
« on: December 10, 2010, 12:51:18 AM »
Hi Fellas ....I have had my Xciting 500i for a bout 3 years now with 16000km.
Its become a little temperamental on the start in our warm climate.
Turns over ok.
Prime pump seems to work ok (by sound only).
Seems to be initial fuel/air mix..tried all sorts of combo starts but nothing consistent works.
Sometimes taking 3-4 separated attempts before it fires up.
I have changed the plug and checked air filter so that is eliminated. I am now suspecting the injector itself.
Does the stuff u add to fuel work ...has anybody had this problem ?
Could it be a sensor that interfaces with the ECU ?
Any light on the situation appreciated.
P.S once up and running its still a hot cat and the best fun machine ever.
Kanga

thanks for reply
..the battery check ok as I can leave boost charger in place whilst trying to start.
I sometimes suspect the starter motor is running a little slow..but the verdict is out on that!
It will usually start after I have had 3-4 goes with  a minute or 2 break with key off so that injection prime pump restarts each time I reignite. It just seems not enough fuel is getting thru for ignition.
Is there a fuel filter somewhere accessible ??
Thanks guys,

Alex

I have had a similar problem where the 500RI would turn over but not fire up, I fixed it by adding an auxiliary battery..it would fire up ok when it was jump started by some kind passing motorist, which is why I blamed the battery....Alex..from Queensland where its supposed to be hot ( but not this year) ::)

Seems I read somewhere on the forum last year that Kymco had an issue with some starters not turning fast enough and have a replacement starter that turns faster.  Anyone else remember this or have heard of the problem?

Yes, I remember that too, though not sure what model.  Was either a 250 or a 500.  It's worth asking a dealer about.

There should be a fuel filter you can clean or replace.  On my carburated Xciting it's down behind the plastic skirt on the left side about where your left foot rests.  If it runs ok once it's started, though, I wouldn't suspect that.

Yes, fuel additives do indeed help clean dirty injectors.  That'd be the easiest thing of all to try.  Might take several tankfulls untill you notice anything.   ;)
