Comfortable Cruising Speed
« on: February 17, 2011, 03:19:34 AM »
I was told from my dealer that riding the GV 250 at 65mph for more than 15 - 20 minutes is very stressful and not good for that motor. Yet I have read that many people take theirs on the highways.  I recently cracked a piston and had major service on my bike and want it to last a long time.  Any one have any comments on this topic would be greatly appreciated. I am riding a 2006 with about 4500 miles.

For some strange reason, you will hear a lot of bs if you talk to delers and, surprisingly, sometimes to service personnel.
Avoid tech talk with dealers completely and judge service personnel by yourself.

I have 250 cc scoot that happily goes around highway at 90 mph for hours without any problems.
I had in the past 200 cc scoot that did the same.

All scoots run perfectly and have regular oil changes.

Every vehicle I have ever owned was driven at top speed for long period of time with no immediate or cumulative ill effects, including sports bikes and small 2T/4T scoots and bikes, water, oil and air cooled. Not even overheating. Never a mechanical engine breakdown.

Your piston problem was unrelated freak incident at that mileage.

It is as simple as that.

I have a P250 which is just about the same engine. I just looked and all of the 250cc Kymco bikes have the same piston and sleeve assembly 12100-KHE7-9000 ($108 at Stadium). I know for a fact that it is quite capable of running at full speed (70-80 MPH) for hours. I rode 340 miles one day at speeds between 50 and 80 mph on a blown header pipe (see my Ride of March photos below) and rode over 830 miles between 6:00 am Friday and 9:00 pm Sunday. I am not a little guy and my scoot was laden with stuff.

I feel confident in saying your scoot should be able to the same.

these scoot all have the same piston/sleeve assembly: GV, P250, MXU, and B&W

Agreed, especially the bolded part.

I however wouldn't run anything at it's top speed for long but at 5mph under that speed - sure.

It's probably a good idea to vary the speed a bit and not keep the revs at the same spot, but
that probably doesn't matter after break-in.

At 65, the 250 is in it's element, probabably still not even wasting fuel.

i found the biggest limiting factors were my bladder and the fuel capacity... and I had a busted header pipe.

Don't run at top speed, your scooter will need a service soon. To be safe, drive top speed (65mph) around 10 minutes then cruise at 40-45mph would be good. Think scooter like your car, do you really do top speed your car at 250mph!!! Be conservative and your scooter live longer.   8)
