discussion about Dr Pulley sliders
« on: July 04, 2024, 05:32:21 PM »
Below is a quote from https://www.buggypartsnw.com/ (I've always purchased my Dr P sliders from these folks)

Dr. Pulley Slider Weights are a different style of roller

The unique shape of the Dr Pulley weights offer a variety of benefits:

- Sliders engage up to 20% faster than traditional round rollers.
- Due to their form-fitting shape to the interior dimensions of the variator, they allow you to engage in higher gear ratios, even when using lighter than stock weights.
- Dr Pulley Sliders last longer with much less wear than round rollers because they slide rather than roll (hence the name!). Round rollers develop flat spots over time that will contribute to rough accleration and deceleration, as well as reduced overall performance.

Rollers and sliders should be inspected annually (at minimum) for wear. If flat spots or obvious wear is detected, they should be replaced. This is one advantage of sliders, as they already have flat sides and are not affected by this wear as much as rollers.

Choosing the Dr Pulley Slider's weight:

- Lighter weights (7-9g) will give a lot more climbing power at the cost of some top end speed. Cruising speed RPMs will likely increase as well.
- Middle range (10-12g) weights will give improved low end power, climbing, and acceleration versus stock weights. Top speed should be similar to stock weights, and RPMs will be similar to the stock weights
- Heavier weights (13-16g) retain (or slightly improve) existing top speed with the possible expense of climbing ability - but are great for reducing top speed RPMs for better gas mileage.

Scooter Owners: Most popular choices (and why!)

- 11g:  Great all-around weight for a mix of hills and flat road riding. Our most popular weight for scooter owners. Works best with the stock main spring. Aftermarket CDI worth considering.
- 12g: For mostly flat ground riding with occasional hills. Some low end gain, excellet top speed retention. Works best with the stock or yellow main spring. Aftermarket CDI worth considering.
- 13g: Great weight for commuting and those who spend a lot of time at cruising speeds. Slightly better low end compared to stock weights. Possible top speed gain and lowered top speed RPMs.  Works best with the stock or yellow main spring. Aftermarket CDI worth considering.

Note: Using Slider weights that are at the lower end of the weight scale can be too light to overcome the main torque spring tension (expecially wih the stronger performance main torque springs) before hitting the RPM limiter in the stock CDI (sparl ignition unit).  This can result in less top speed. You can typically get around this using a performance CDI unti with a higher RPM ceiling.

Just a observation! I have a '23 People S 150i ABS scooter. I bought it in March, and it now has 700 miles on it. I just took my variator apart to install Dr Pulley sliders. The stock rollers in my People were 10gr. With only 700 miles and they were already developing flat spots. I'm waiting for my 9gr Dr Pulley sliders to get here from Buggypartsnw.com. With priority mail they should get to me in 1 to 3 days. I recommend taking your scooter apart to determine the factory weight before you order Dr Pulleys. I personally have installed lighter Dr Pulleys in my last 3 scooters. I was very happy with the results. I recommend them for longevity and better performance.
Blue '23 People S 150i ABS  Moto Discovery GPS bar, Shad SH33 top case, Iridium spark plug, Black reflective graphics, Battery Tender ring terminal cable, LED tag light.
Past rides- '73 Honda 450, '00 Harley Softail Deuce, '10 Kymco People 150, '12 Kymco GTI 300, '21 Kymco X-Town 300i ABS

My take on the wear on stock roller weights is not nearly so dire! Sure, they show some wear after even a couple hundred miles.
I was told years ago that rollers are made of something other than metal so that they wear - and not variator parts. Rollers are scheduled for a change at intervals of several thousands of miles. And they are always found to have signs of wear, flat spots, buffed dark areas, etc. but,....but darn few of us notice any difference in the performance of our CVT as these rollers reach the end of their service life. Service schedules seem to give very conservative intervals for service.
At least - that has been my experience with a Honda, Piaggio, Suzuki and Kymco scooter. Others may have a different take on the subject.
I've learned to sweat the proper positioning of a Dr P slider when installing them - otherwise I forget my weights until next service time.
Just say'in...

UPDATE: I discovered my postage scale was broken. In reality my People S 150i had 13gr rollers from
the factory. I replaced them with 11 1/2gr sliders from Dr. Pulley.
