Wheel balancing:: Dyna beads vs lead weights
« on: August 23, 2008, 12:03:18 PM »
I  just  put on  a  new  set  of tires (Avon  Viper Strykes ,subject  for  future  discussion) I  have been  told  that  I  am very  set in  my ways..So  when  my friend   mounted  my tires  and said  why  not try this  new way  to  balance  wheels..I  smirked  and said  "Hey  I'm a  lead weight  man".. So  he  does  his  thing and I ride  home  on my new  tires with  lead weights..Im  riding on  the highway  that  night  comming home  from  a  scooter  event at 70 mph  and  I can  feel the  dreaded  balance  bounce  as I  move up  and   down  thru the speed  range.. *&^%$#*@ and a few  explatives ...Im going back  to to  the tire  shop  tommorrow  and get it  balanced  right!!!!!..My Buddy  says  whats  wrong??  I  said she needs  to  be  rebalanced  ,he responds it  wont make  much of a difference..Takes  the front  wheel  off  and sure enough  it  on  spec  according to  the  machine..He  smiles and say  do  you  trust me..I said  of course..He  takes off  the  lead weights  on  both  wheels  and puts  these  tiny  white beads  thru  the valve  stem..

I  go  out on  the  same highway in  the  same  lane  looking make this  puppy  bounce....Nothing  smooth  like  a  babies  bottom..

The  local  taxi  company  uses  them  and  has added  30%  to  tire life  and never  has to  rebalance  between  tire  changes..

Heres  a link check it  out  for  yourselves  http://www.innovativebalancing.com/

This is a great find! When I have to replace my tires, I will try this if the tires need balancing- I would like to bring up something that you may already know. All tires, car, motorcycle, scooter have a yellow spot of paint on the side wall-this is the lightest part of the tire. This spot should be positioned at/inline with the tire valve stem- which is the heaviest (add valve stem). many times on smaller tires like scooter and some of the smaller motorcycle tires you may not need to do anything to balance it. Many tire shops don't even know this and will just mount the tire with the spot wherever, some times contributing to the out of balance  of the tire. I keep about 4-6 oz. of slime in my dual-sport and dirtbike tires for obvious reasons (thorns) and this stuff works to also balance the tire, like the item you have found. Thanks for sharing the site on the ceramic balance beads-what an easy fix. Woud you mind sharing what the cost of this product is?.

I had  my wheels  done at  a local  "CHOPPER"  shop  for $ 15 a  wheel  installed.
