Speedometer issue
« on: July 24, 2008, 01:58:46 PM »
I just noticed the speedometer on my 125 if off 5-6 MPH.  If I am going 20MPH IO am in reality going 15MPH.   Is this a issue with the Agility 125s or is my Speedometer in need of repair?

Yes, the speedo on these scoots is always a concern. It is not just the Agility either...most scoots out there are "generous" with their indications.  Check out the reviews section on www.justgottascoot.com

I am planning on "calibrating" mine very soon with a GPS. I always feel like I am going faster than I probably am.
The only accurate speedos I have owed were on my Aprilia SR50 (awesome scoot...shame the
motor was only a 50cc) and my 1986 Honda Elite.

Hopefully I will have time to measure the true speed and do a cross ref chart
for everyone.
The Agility speedo seems to be fairly accurate below 20 MPH, but then veers off
the faster
I go.

More info to follow.

Please post your speed chart when you get it finished.

Thanks

Ok, the results are in.

Here is what I recorded with my GPS this evening:

Speedo - GPS (Actual)
10       -  10
20       -  20
30       -  24-25
40       -  34
50       -  43-44
60       -  52

Top speed run- 56 MPH on GPS (Flat, about 1/4 mile run, no wind, 215 lbs (me).  Ran 3 times.  Holds 34-40 on steep hills, but was WOT.

All speeds are in MPH.  Pretty much what I thought.  I never heard of a scoot with very accurate indicators.  Still has some nice torque especially for a stock 125cc.  I still say for the money, this is one heck of a scooter.  Gets me to work with no issues and is perfect for errands around town.  NOT good for 2 up riding or faster roads...but still has the "little extra" in the throttle to pull away.  40-45 MPH seems to be the sweet spot.  Still better than any Chinese GY-6 "150cc" I have ever ridden.  You can tell that Kymco has this motor set up much better.  I am tempted to throw some upgrades at it (bigger jet/carb, new pipe) but A) can't confirm which parts/mods would fit and B) I then defeat the purpose of having such a great little inexpensive scooter.  I have been down the "mod road" before and it is expensive and in the end all that time and money for an additional 4-5 MPH ain't worth it for me.  I will continue to enjoy this for what it is.

Hope that helps anyone who wanted to know.

Be safe

Now how to I calibrate mine once I find out the actual speed? Is there an adjustment somewhere?

No adjustment that I am aware of.  Since the whole unit is set for KM, if there was a replacement unit that came in MPH, I would recommend doing that, but the cost I am sure would be high.  From what I understand, there are gears in the unit that are "calibrated" but no adjusting screw that I know of.  I am sure you may know this, but just in case...remember that if the speed is in KM, then the odometer is also "metric".  Make sure you convert that reading if you want to know how many "miles" you have on the scoot.  This fact was proven in another forum...anything coming out of China or Taiwon (except SYM scooters) seems to be in KMs.

I do not even pay attention to these speedos.  The only one that was worth anything was on my Aprilia SR-50...and that was digital.

I just rememeber my little conversion chart and stay with the flow of traffic...

Good luck

I just use a little piece of reflective tape to mark off the 50 MPH mark. The rest I can figure out ;D
It's good to have some point of reference, but we really get so little attention from LEOs that I think it's of little concern.

The only 'performance' mod that I did to my Agility (and the only one I'm going to do), was to switch out every other roller with a slightly heavier ones. I used 11g (18*14mm) weights and there is no more flat spot at 15 mph getting away. It makes a dramatic difference and the scoot feels much faster from a dead stop.

Good point Ronin with the tape and not being as noticed.  Nice suggestion on the rollers.  I haven't expored that "area" yet, but mine scoot does not have that 15 MPH dead spot you speak of.  It is pretty cool to try out different combos with the rollers...if I do have that problem, you saved me some time in figuring out where to start.  Thanks again.

This motor does feel pretty darn strong for a 125cc.  I can't see how going crazy with a new muffler/jets and air box mods would be worth the added 3-5 MPH and money/time.  What a steal this little guy is.  The Agility City looks even better...I wonder if that will ever be available.

On a flat stretch of road I got my Agility 125 to hit a dreamometer reading of 70 miles per Hour (Not KM). Is that an actual 60mph? I was surprised...I backed off right away as my unit only has 170KM on it and it is still braking in.

Yes...60 MPH is possible.  That is probably more like 55-57...but close enough.  I have hit 30-43 uphill...this little thing is amazing.  Downhill, at times I got 67 MPH (GPS verified).  For me the Agility's sweet spot of 40-45 MPH is nice.  Very stable ride.  Front brake has been squeaking a bit and is slightly warped.  End of the season now, so I'll look into next year.  Once yours breaks in and the oil is changed etc...you should see even better performance.

Be safe and congrats again.

No problem. If I were you, I'd still grab some of those rollers cheap off ebay now, and the next time you have the tranny cover off, slap them in there. You will be even more amazed with this scooter.

Good idea Ronin (great movie by the way).  Here's the part of the post where i ask you a favor...do you remember the company/person you got yours from?  I do need to inspect the belt at some point and it would make sense to do that at then.  I think I have a set of 11g Malossi rollers from when I had my Aprilia SR-50.  Thanks for the tip and size info.
