Jumped timing?
« on: April 21, 2011, 06:41:43 PM »
I've tested the electrical system on my people 50 2T and cleaned the carburetor.  It still doesn't sound like it's sparking.  I was able to get a backfire while turning up the idle.  Is it possible for it have jumped timing?  It died coming up on a stop light and wouldn't start afterward.

The timing is controlled by the cdi, which is triggered by the pulser coil.  Unless the woodruff key on the flywheel sheared, then it can't be off.  If you have no spark, it is either the stator/pulser coil, cdi, ignition coil, or spark plug.

Thanks.  The only part available for ordering was the CDI - that I haven't already replaced or it checked out.  Will await part delivery and will get back to this post with results.

What does sparking sound like? j/k I assume you pulled the plug and visually checked for spark, or there always the tongue method. ;)

Sounds like you have narrowed down the issue to the cdi.  Post back your results.  Good luck!

Yes.  I visualized a spark between contacts on the sparkplug after attempting to start and grounding on block.  I replaced the CDI, but that wasn't it.  I was able to visualize fuel to the carburetor from the tube from the fuel filter/pump by sucking on the vacuum line, but no fuel just cranking it.  I'm had cleaned the carburetor, but now I'm second guessing , and am going to find a video regarding rebuilding a people 50 carburetor.  Anyone know of a good one I can access online?

I  checked the carburetor and put it back together by a Youtube video by pizzaface.  The auto bystarter was 1 ohms.  Manual indicates if 5 or greater replace.  Going by the manual (kymco people 50 by kymco) and using the troubleshooting chart/diagram - my sparkplug is dry.  I suppose replacing the auto bystarter is the only thing left to do.  Any ideas?
