Tomos ST vs Agility 50 vs others
« on: June 10, 2011, 04:32:50 PM »
Hey. I'm looking to get a scooter/moped to use as transportation while going college. I will be riding in Albany, NY. I have ridden a moped before but never a scooter. I like the idea of the bigger wheels of the Tomos ST. It has similar performance and price as well. I'm looking for something that doesn't require a motorcycle license (tomos lx and agility 50 do not need this). It seems from researching that both are able to reach about 45mph with mods.

I know there will be a bias here but what is the reason that you guys chose a scooter over a similarly priced moped?

Thanks

Then get a scooter with large wheels. :)
ST has <2.5 hp which is comparable to 50 cc 4T scoots.
You can find 50 cc scoots with 4-5 hp which is a big difference in such small displacement category.
Simply it is too slow. Poor suspension, very bad brakes compared to scoots. Extremely durable, you can see 20 or 30 years old Tomos mopeds on our roads.

Do you know where Tomos factory is from? It is just 100 kms away from my hometown.  ;)

In my oppinion, agility is more practical because of storage under the seat
and gives you more comfort during everyday use.
Also, there is a usable rear seat and gives you better image.

Don't get me wrong
I like tomos machines and have both agility 50 and a tomos 14M model from 1982
50 cc, 7 hp, 5 speed and hitting 65 mph   ;D
awesome machine, but ST is different kind of machine

Anyway, my vote goes to agility

Wheni was looking for a 50cc ride i was told by several dealers to go for a scooter cos they were all generally quicker than all the 50cc bikes. I ended up buying my Agility and am pretty happy with it. Good build quality, decent looks, decent handling and now a decent speed since i modded it a bit.

Not ideal for riding 2 up but in emergencies or on flat ground it is capable.
Chaos is my co-pilot.

Thanks for the info everyone. A scooter does seem a whole lot more practical now that you've mentioned it.

I'm seeing my uncle this weekend who is the sales manager/part owner of a Yamaha/Kawi/Kymco powersports shop. I'm going to ask him if I can come down and test drive a few models and hopefully give me a good deal on a used (or new) agility 50.

I'll definitely be back on here soon!

Welcome....fellow Albanian....Firstly, moped is the legal name for a mototized scooter (see NYS moped laws under motorcycle laws).
Larger wheels are helpful  here in the Spring when it is sometimes hard trying to miss the road bumps and small potholes (God help you if you hit the big ones).....Which is one of the reasons I chose the Kymco agility 50 (having larger wheels than many other scoots)...otherwise it has great quality, to which I can attest after having ridden nearly three thousand miles thru Albany and many of the beautiful country  and mountain roads to the south, and after the break-in am getting one hundred miles per gallon of gas.

You seem to be concerned about the law, so know that the class B  in NY is accepted  because it is regulated electronically to not accede 30MPH.....Personally I find that speed does very well in this area, and strongly suggest that you don't deregulate for obvious reasons.....at least untill you have given the legit scoot a chance to prove itself.
If you really want to get around faster or farther,....take the motorcycle course at Hudson Valley and get the wheels that are more suitable.

Although many on this forum will dispute me on this point........I have come to believe that all light weight scooters travelling at higher deregulated speeds will eventually put you in a place you don't want to be.
