Great Forum and Noisy Drive Belt
« on: November 07, 2013, 08:44:34 AM »
Hi
First of all I would like to share my happyness when I have found this forum yesterday. seems that youre doing a great job giving this stage to kymco owners from all over the globe.
I own a 2007 xciting 500 (the one with the upper mirrors but no fuel injection), bought it back in 2007 new from the shop and still riding on it.
If I remember correctly a year or two after, my drive belt started to make funny noises. it happens when I start driving, it sounds something like "grrrr" and it vanish after 2 seconds when i exellerate. The noise is cpming in periods. I could get now 2 monthes of noisy belt sound every time i start riding and after that a month of no sound at all.
Usually when I replace the belt for a new one there is no noise for a few month but then it comes back.
I have talked to a few mechanics and they called it an "illness" of the xciting and they can fix it for me temporarely but the noise will come back. I dont know to explain technically what is making that noise.
so... after my long post here I would like to know if some of you, my xciting colleague are experiencing the same problem?

maybe worn rollers or glazed clutch... not necessarily the belt... typical scooter thing...

Always replace rollers with belt, but as vivo said, I think its just a scooter thing. Could be dust build up? But I would not worry, I have an 2007 also, and it chirps and such all the time. It seems to make different noises when hot or cold?  :-*

My Downtown does this.  On take off, it makes a vvvvvttt, vvvvvttt, vvvvvt sound like I'm holding in a clutch and revving the engine.  And we know there's no clutch.  It doesn't always do this either.

I do use seafoam and that seems to be better than if I don't add it, but I think I'm going to try high-test gas on the next fillup to see if that helps.  The dealer told me I could use regular, but that may have been bad advice.

Clutch glaze or clutch may need to be replaced.  How many miles are on the scoot.  If the clutch goes metal to metal on the bell. The bell might need to be replaced too.  It is a relatively easy fix.  My clutch needed to be replaced at 16000 miles.  I had an after market Malossi Fly Clutch with a standard Clutch Bell.  I replaced both.  They consensus is the the stock clutches last about 20000 miles.
I wish I could ride more and drive less!

Had the same issue with my 2009. I used medium grade Emory cloth to sand down the glaze from inside the bell and also scuffed the clutch pads. Issue went away immediately.  Also make sure your clutch pads are 1mm thick or greater. If not they're shot, new they are 4mm. Also, check your clutch bell - if it's really blue it could have overheated a lot and it might be worth replacing the bell, although this would be rare. I burned up mine practicing for the California circle jerk MI test (using my rear brake to navigate the tight circle - don't ask).
