Installing New Airsal BBK on People 50 2t
« on: June 29, 2011, 01:59:55 PM »
Hello,
I am going to be installing a new Airsal BBK on my 2001 Kymco People 50 2t this coming weekend. When I bought the bike, there was one installed on it. I did not know, and PO did not tell me. Long story short, it seized as a result of lack of oil (pump takes care of 50cc displacement, not 72cc), running lean, and the wrong spark plug used for the kit (an 8 instead of a 9).

With this kit I will add an extra 2 oz of premix directly to each tank of fuel to compensate for the pump not handling extra displacement, run the proper plug for the kit, and adjust the air fuel mixture as to not run so lean. This is where my question lies:

In the Kymco manual the air screw adjustment is listed as 1 degree, then a rectangle, then and omega. What does this mean? If i were to want to adjust the airs screw mixture to run more on the rich side, which way would i turn the adjusment screw? more clockwise or counter clockwise.

Also, the manual says that lean condiditons can be caused by a dirty air filter. I will clean with detergent and re-oil. Should i drill an estra hole in the airbox to allow more air in and through the system?

Thanks as always for your input,
Todd

I am not sure I agree with the manual. A plugged air filter would cause a rich condition, not a lean one. A clean air filter will allow more air in and lean it out. Drill a hole and you get even more air. A plugged fuel filter would lean out the mix.

I've always wanted  to just bypass the oil pump thing and pre-mix my fuel. Seems like the best way to ensure that a pump going bad won't kill my engine. How do I know what mix that pump is giving me anyway? If the wire stretches it could be way off. Good luck with your air mix screw. The Haynes manual has the setting but mine is on the other side of town at the moment. Never loan out your manual.  Or your scooter. :P

If it controls the air flow, turning it in will make it richer at idle. You will want to increase your main jet to enrichen the mix above half throttle.

So go for the Larger than stock jet (im not sure what PO put in there) and then turn airscrew back in a bit? I am not sure what the stock spec means in the manual. I would like to start out at stock and work my way in a touch.

it states that  it shoud be 1 degree,,,then there is a small rectangle,,,,then there is an omega symbol. What does that mean? Thanks as always sid

Sorry, I don't know what all that means. Get a selection of jets and do your plug chops. Reading your plug is the only way to make sure you have the mix right.

should i do the chops with engine at idle, or should I run the engine up to 3/4 or so? I should be looking for a darker cardboard color for the proper plug chop correct?

Here is a link to a manual for your bike/engine. I downloaded the manual (to a Macintosh-I used Stuff-it to un-sip it) The carb settings are 1.25 plus or minus .5 turns from all the way in.  Hope this helps.

My new Kit came in yesterday and was waiting for me when I got home from work. I was able to install and have running within an hour. (already had top end off engine). The Airsal kit has an Aluminum head gasket. I noticed after a few heat cycles that there was a small air leak at the head. I retorqued the head bolts ( there was a lot of movement from initial install). She ran much better still. I did about 6 heat cycles last night. I went out to the garage this am, and started again before work. She ran a little rough, and sounded like there were some air leaks again coming from the head gasket. Go to give her some throttle, and she stalls. I did not have time to take the cooling shroud back off to again retorque the head bolts.

Question is, with a flat aluminum (no bead) head gasket, how much torque should be required to get a proper seal, and how many times at the beginning should I have to retorque the bolts. Looking forward to getting back on the road. I did ride to the end of my driveway, but no further.

Hoping to have her broken in and on her first good ride by the weekend.
