KYMCO Cobra 50
« on: June 14, 2011, 02:17:18 AM »
Im new to the whole scooter thing and last year i bought a cobra 50 from my neighbor. I drive it about 12 miles from my house every day and it tops out at about 37-40mph.  I guess its geared pretty low beacuse it takes off fast and reaches top speed in a few seconds.  I would like to get it going a little faster like around 45-50mph any way i can accomplish this?  I heard of changing variators up but im not too sure what that even is.  Any help is much appreciated thanks guys

1st things 1st, go to youtube and search for "how a variator works" therew a good vid on there, or use to be, that shows you. Dont worry I didnt know either when I 1st got my scooter.

You can also search for just "variator" and theres a few vids showing a scooter running with the crankcase cover off to let you see exactly what happens wen you twist the throttle.

Is yours a 2 stroke or 4 stroke? I dont kno what other get on the same scooter as yours but I get 48-50 on my agility 50 4t. You might try a race variator, I got 5-8mph on my top end with mine. You could also fit heavier rollers, try maybe 1g over stock weight. You will lose some acceleration and find it harder uphills with the heavier rollers so you can put in a tighter torque spring in the rear pulley to compensate for this. You might get another 5-12mph with both these, but like I said im just going with my agility 4 stroke.

Hope this helps a bit anyway.

Pretty cool scoot there.....
Yeah, that scoot you can do many things to hot rod it...bbk, carb,pipe,vario,springs,rollers..
I know someone with one also and his runs 45-50 stock, well some cvt tuning and a pipe anyway.
The 10" wheels help with that takeoff i'm pretty sure,...
The cobra, AIR COOLED S9, Some of the ppl's share this same engine..
I would install slightly stiffer contra, fly springs, maybe try some 5-5.5 rollers and the hills should be a bit better, bit more rpms, that should help you...
Of course you could tear it apart and port the sh** out of it too.... :D

I had Cobra 10 years ago and it was positively the slowest 2stroke 50 cc scoot of that era.
It had a top of indicated 45 mph and took ages to get there, especially from standstill to approx 30 km/h.
Up hill it was comparable to 50 cc 4stroke scooter, which is quite an achievement.

However, it is still going on strong around my town, happily serving God-knows-which owner by now.
Also, a friend of mine has 10+ years old Cobra with 25.000+ kms and he replaced only the belt recently.
Still OEM brakes etc.

A complete build can/will be expensive... I would start with the cvt and a pipe.....
