How to: Install K&N Air Filter for DT300I
« on: October 15, 2016, 02:58:25 AM »
Hello Fellow DT300i owners, I thought I'd share with you today my newly acquired K&N replacement air filter for the DT300i. I bought this directly from K&N's official website. Part number is KY-2911. It says it fits the 2015 model, but it will also fit older model years like my 2012. Anyways, onto the quick and simple install!

Part number for the air filter!

Tools you will need: Phillips head screw driver (yes that's all you will need!)

Step 1: Place the scooter up on the center stand
Step 2: Remove the 8 black phillips head screws from the air box cover. (They are circled in red below) Then pull the cover off, it should come right off.

Step 3: Remove the 7 brass screws holding the air filter in place. Then pull the air filter out.

Comparison between OEM air filter and K&N air filter

Step 4: Place the new K&N air filter where the old filter came out. It can only go in one way! Then secure the air filter down with the 7 brass screws. Tip: Don't tighten the screws in all the way until you have all 7 screws in!

Step 5: Secure the air box cover with the 8 black phillips head screws. Again, don't tighten them down all the way until you get all the screws in! Optional: Attach K&N stickers onto the air box, and you're done! Pat yourself on the back and have a cold one!

Yes it did. The pinkish purple color on the filter is the oil.

How is the quality? The K and N filter, actually winds up being cheaper. $51.99 w/ free shipping as opposed to $37.18 + $20.77 shipping from kymcopartsmonster.  BTW, I like those harbor freight screw drivers [emoji16]. I have about 5 new sets myself

I can't really comment on the quality of the air filter, it seems about on par with the oem one as far as look and feel of the plastic compared to the oem one(cheap lol). The filter surface area looks smaller than that of the oem one. However, K&N is a reputable company and I'm sure they know what they're doing. This filter will pay itself off after about 4-6k miles. It is washable and reusable so this will be the last filter you will ever need to buy for your dt300i.
Oh and about the harbor freight screwdrivers. I get them for free every now and then, and they work surprisingly well, the magnetic tip could be stronger but it works and sure beats one without it. 5 sets eh? Looks like I got some catching up to do ;)

I'm not convinced on K&N, in the past I had them in my car.

If you poured sand into it and shook it, the sand would cone thru. Not very good as a filter to filter out smaller derbis.

DP, I'm sure it's comparable to the OEM filter. Plus I don't like paying 60% of the cost of the product for shipping!!! Every time I check my filter, it always looks pretty clean, so I don't think that debris would be a problem. You are right, K and N is reputable company.
As for the screw drivers, they are good enough, for what I need them for. Plus I also have 3 multi meters, 4 led flashlights and a few other " free" items. Harbor Freight, is one of my favorite stores. I go quite often. Lol

Had a K&N on my motorcycle a few years ago, it sure does let the engine breath better, but nevertheless I removed it because I wasn't satisfied with the filtration. The air filter on my bike should be replaced every 12000km, and with the OEM the airbox was always clean inside after that period.

This wasn't the case with K&N.
The airbox was always dirty even though I would wash it and oil it with the K&N kit.
The maintenance intervals are shorter and since getting to the airbox on my bike requiers removing the side panel screws and fuel tank it was just to much of a hassle. Went back to OEM.
Also tried the Pipercross filter, but still had a dirty airbox if the cleaning intervals were more then 6000km.

But since it's so easy to change a scooter air filter take a look inside the airbox after a few thousand km/mi just to be sure.
