Speedometer problem

Bike has been sitting awhile (several months).  Took it out for a spin and the Speedo doesn't move.  Everything else is fine.  Any ideas?

PS:  It's an 08 carbed x500.  It's for sale btw, 4k, Givi topbox, as new, 2800.00.

This seems to be a common problem.
Cleaning the sensor on the wheel helps once or twice, but eventually you'll end up replacing it.

Urbestfriend can only say "Scroll down to Pg.3 under "Speedometer
Problem" (21 Comments).  Yes...This appears to be a real issue for many.
It has been for me.   I have a GPS on mine,  because the speedometer
may or may not work.  Sometimes it's the sensor,  could be one of the
small wires could be broke and may or may not make contact from time
to time.  Could be unobservable corrosion on the connector between the
speedometer head and the sensor.  I bought some contact grease and applied
it to these terminals.  It didn't work and then all of a sudden worked fine.
Since I was hit by the deer,  my bike has been down for a few weeks.
While it's down,  I ordered a new sensor.  The only reason I did this is
because my dealer originally worked on my sensor and routed it wrong
when they reinstalled it.  This may have put some stress on the wires.

This has happened a couple of times for me as well, easily solved as described below, pasted from another forum:

You need to reset the speedometer. Here's how to do it: First, remove the negative battery lead. With that lead removed turn the ign switch to the run position. You will then touch and hold the battery cable back to the negative terminal of the bat. Watch the speedo, this should reset the speedo. Now turn off the ign switch and reconnect the battery.

I did this with my Kymco and it resolved the problem easily. Sorry you had to take such invasive measures, but if it happens again try this solution. It worked for me.

We're talking about a carbureted version here - but they don't recommend this on a fuel injected version do they?  Connecting or disconnecting the battery with the key on isn't something I would recommend doing on any vehicle - but especially not on a fuel injected one.  I wonder if the same reset could be done by disconnecting and reconnecting the dash connector while the key is on?  That way you aren't surging the power to the electronic ignition and cold start circuits (or the FI circuits).

Yes, it´s carbureted, don´t know if this is the correct procedure on the Ri.

But fuel injected cars and boats that I have come across never had any objections about disconnecting the battery, it can become discharged for some reason, and the fuel injection has to handle such a situation as well.

Power spikes (up or down) can cause FI control modules more problems than anything else, but there are all sorts of sensitive electronic components on these bikes.  I would avoid connecting the battery while the key is on, and even avoid disconnecting it.

Thanks you guys for posting info about the speedometer problems. My speedometer quit one day but the odometer kept working. Was about to try something like adjusting sensor one front wheel and screw that up when one day i turned on the key and the needle swung hard right then hard left and has worked every sence. Is everything going to fix that easy?
