Question about brake light ('07 Agility 50)
« on: September 24, 2011, 02:06:20 AM »
Hi,
I just bought a used Agility 50 from a friend of mine and just noticed that the brake light doesn't work.  I'd like to try to fix it myself (so I don't have to drive it without it working).

How can I tell if the problem is with the bulb or the switch or something else?  I looked at the bulb and it had two filaments and both appeared unbroken.  If I turn the ignition to on (without starting the engine) and hit the brakes, the light doesn't come on.

If anybody has some advice for me, I'd really appreciate it!!!! Thanks so much!

Does the tail light come on at all when you turn on the bike?  If you have no red light at all then either the plug is disconnected or you have a bad bulb.

If you have light from the taillight but it gets no brighter when you hit the brakes then you probably have a brake light switch out of adjustment.  To check this pull in the left brake lever an listen for the click from the switch, then pull in the right and listen for it's click.  If one side isn't clicking then look underneath the lever and you'll see the switch assembly and it's little spring loaded sensor.  loosen the screw that holds the assembly and turn the assembly until the switch is depresses - then tighten the screw back.  Now check it again and you should hear its click and see the brake light.

When I start the engine, the tail light works (but not the brake light).

The second suggestion sounds more plausible but I don't really see the switch assembly you are talking about.  On the left brake lever, I don't really hear a click.  For the right one, I here a click and see that the brake lever depresses this little button that is clicking.  The left side is a completely different configuration and there is no little button (because it is completely different, no space for it or its hidden).  If one side is clicking it, would the brake light come on?  Or does it require both sides?   What else should I check?

Thanks for your help and suggestions!!

If you have a tail light, then i'd say the bulb is bad. Remove and check for good connection. I have used wd-40 to get the good connection.(it works if you don't have any dielectric grease)
The "clicking" you hear only on one side is because the one side has a master cylinder, the other side(rear) has the hub. that's normal

I had this problem on my Xciting 500 - though both sides have the same assembly with the little button.  My right hand assembly wasn't adjusted properly, and I didn't hear the click when pulling on that brake - so the brake light was always on.  Adjusting the assembly to where the black switch was normally pressed solved my problem.  The switch on your left handlebar is different - and it is inside the mount for the brake handle (two wires go from the steering column into the assembly that holds the brake lever).  If you don't have 2 wires going in - then that's the problem (it's missing).  Otherwise unscrew the mount for the brake lever and check the switch (trip it manually with the key on).  I don't know specifically what yours looks like or where/how to adjust it.  But then you wouldn't want me to make it too easy would you?

The bulb could be bad.  They are cheap and easy enough to replace - and if it doesn't fix it then hold onto the new one as a spare.

This might come in handy for you...

Don't know what happened with the link above, but my computer chucked a heartie when I clicked on it.

Hmmm - it works for me with Google Chrome.  Try pasting the address into your browser.

Thanks everyone for the advice.  Luckily it was easily solved... it had the wrong bulb in it, I think.  (When tested outside of the scooter, the bulb that was in there before worked.) But I replaced it anyway with an 1157 and the brake light worked!

JustWantToRide: thanks for the manual, I'm sure it will come in handy in the future!
