Lights on ebay.
« on: November 17, 2011, 04:46:21 PM »
Hey everyone, I saw on ebay 2 diff set's of head light bulbs for the x500. They are the blue type. One says it is stock voltage, but will increase light out put by 30%???? The other is about 90 & or 100 watt! Can the x500 electric system handle this, and do you the the stock watt really does put out 30% more light? I have to do something as night time driving with stock light is not getting it done. Sure wish it had the 4 lights of the Down Town.

Not sure I would stick in something with 90 or 100 watts.  Not sure about the electrical system but the heat will be significant and damage to the reflector or lens may occur. I just replaced the low beam bulbs in my GL1800.  It uses 55 watt H7 bulbs.  I looked a the bulbs that say 25% and 30% more light (for almost double the price as well) in the same wattage.  Reading the fine print on the packages it says that the normal lights degrade over time and run at 80% of the original brightness.  Reading on it says the bulbs are 30% brighter than the stock bulbs at 80%.  Net gain about 10% over the regular halogen bulb.  I went with the regular bulb and when I replaced one of the two lights I turned on the bike and wow, the new regular was very much brighter than the old regular one that was about 4 years old.  I had not realized that the bulbs degrade over time and went ahead and replaced the other bulb as well. The H7 Halogen can be bought at Walmart, Autozone, etc.  The x500 uses the H4, you may be able to get them there as well. That way you can read all the fine print on the package backs.  If you want a lot brighter light and stay within the stock wattage you might want to see if they make an HID setup for the x500.

So are you saying that the H7 will work in an x500? Will it damage anything? Is it hotter? Does it suck more juice? Thanks.

The H7 is single element, the H4 is dual (both high and low beam).  They are not interchangeable.  One reason it would be nice to have multiple lights instead of the single duel beam.

I did some research and the PIAA super bright white looks like a good choice, but they do cost a few $$$$. Thanks.

I received the cycle gear magazine which shows a HID kit. Not sure what it fits as it was a universal kit. Wife tossed out the magazine. It's a lead though...

If you get an HID conversion kit then please adjust your headlight down a bit so that the broader beam doesn't go higher than your Halogen bulb...  It will still be brighter to the oncoming traffic - but not as blinding...
