first issue with my downtown 300.....suggestions welcome
« on: February 07, 2012, 11:32:41 PM »
:( :(after riding this scooter now since the end of august of last year.....got my first real issue/problem......which was totally caused by me.....what did i do?.....was in a hurry to get to my truck today and hopped off the scooter without turning the key off....net result pretty much of a dead battery......cranked over a bit when i returned but not enough to get it running......

so.....had to get to the battery......which as i found out required taking the bucket and seat off.....not that difficult but like i said my fault live and learn....as i had the battery exposed (FORTUNATELY....just remove cover screws and positive/negative terminals are right there......so i took the opportunity ....to put a pair of pig tails on the p and n terminals reconnected and have it on the battery tender ...waiting for the light to turn green.....when i got to the battery it kind of confirmed what i knew....its a 10 amp.....and i think you really need a 12 amp(and one that fits the case).....nevertheless....i am hoping it will crank enough to start....if it does not my next move would be to put it on a charger...i have one that you can set to 2 amps....and just let it charge till reads full....this might do a better job at getting the battery back to a point where it will at least kick over...

one other thing.....in getting the seat out i disconnected the courtesy light...no problem with this....but i also had to disconnect a break plug...all the way back in the back..near the battery....i am going to try to start it up once charged and was wondering if this break light has to be connected for it to start.....i don't think so and don't want to put the tray back in and tighten......if it still does not start.....any other suggestions welcomed.....

sounsd good to me but I would connect any plugs before atempting a start. Now if the plug you are talking is just the brake light though I think you are ok to start it...............

back in the rider's seat.......what i did was charge it with a battery charger with a 2 amp...setting just to be safe.......let it sit for about 2 and a half hours.....until fully charged......than i tried turning the key and hitting the start button...it fired up instantaneously.....turned out the plug in the rear under the seat is not for the breaks but the plug in for efi diagnostics.....fits in a little saddle...so the only  line which needs to be removed for bucket/ seat removal is the courtesy light......

i next put the battery on the tender and proceeded to fit the bucket and the seat to the body of the scooter (of course i had to put back the battery cover and tighten the pig tails i also installed)......KEPT ON BT OVERNIGHT AND FIRED UP THIS AM WITH NO PROBLEM....i think i will need to put a 12 amp replacement...and one that fits the box...which will be the challenge...thanks bob....

I use a smart charger, it won't fry or overcharge the battery.

I tie up the battery tender pigtail to the diagnostic cable.  So all I have to do is pop out the small
cover and its right there to connect to the charger.

Poor design if you have to play change the fuse
game while on the road.  Taking the seat off and the plastic seat pan is a PITA.

The new lithium batteries are MUCH smaller, so if you want more capacity and have the money,
they are the ones to buy.  A good supplier is:

What are the dimensions of the stock battery?

Edit; by the size below you could only use the 14AH Lithium..........

One of the 500 guys posted a thread where he used/installed a micro 2 pole connector to plug in the tender. Forget where the thread is but it is new so it should be easy to find.
I thought it was a great idea

If you install the Lithium I would advise against using a BT.................
