2 stroke vs 4 stroke

  Hi, I own a fully derestricted agility 2009 4 stroke scooter with 5.5 gram roller weights and in the hilly area I live in I can only pull my hills at 15 sometimes 20mph.I'm thinking of trading it in for a super8 2 stroke scooter. My question is will a stock derestricted 2 stroke pull hills any better than what I've been doing ( I'm 200 lbs )? I don't want to invest hundreds of dollars into a big bore kit and whatever else it would take,and I don't want to get a 125cc scoot either.  Thank You  Dale

50cc just isn't a lot of displacement for carrying around a 200lb. person. I should know -- I am one, and I had a Yamaha Vino 2-t 50 for years. The 2-stroke is going to have more get-up-and-go, but unless it's liquid-cooled, not all that much more.

If your aversion to a 125cc is legal in nature, I would suggest that you try to get the legal issues straightened out, and then move up to a scooter that can actually get you where you need to go in a reasonable amount of time. I live in a decent-sized city, and the Vino still got me across town faster than the bus, so it was always a win for me, even at 37mph top speed.

I have a stock derestricted 2002 people 50 2t . My home town's nickname is "the hill city" and I can maintain 35 mph (indicated) anywhere in the city . I am just over 200 lb. Good luck .

Science Fact:  You can get a LOT more power out of a 2 stroke with a big bore kit - No replacement for displacement. 

  Most 4 stroke 50s are a bit anemic, with no easy ways to dramatically improve them.  maybe 15% for full-tilt engine, exhaust, carb, airbox replacement.  If you are lucky.

   On the flip side, a 2 stroke fiddy with a 80 or 100cc upgrade is a beast.  Double the displacement, expect 60-70% more power and a small hit to gas milage.

I think the best upgrade for Agility 50 is an Agility 125. You can spend all kinds of money on upgrades as the expense of reliability but I am going to guess the most cost effective is to sell your 50 and buy a new or used Agility 125 (or other 125cc+ scoot).

Sliders might make some difference but you have an engine the size of a string trimmer moving you around.  Hills are not a 50 cc 4T scoots friend and 37-40 MPH is most often the max speed they go on the flat... up hills they are much slower.

My 2004 Kymco People 50 (2 stroke) moves in about the same speeds as yours. When I purchased my "Stallion", my objective was to get to work safely. I weigh 178 Lbs. I understand that my ride is not a speed demon. If you want to use this size of scooter, you have to have patience and practice defensive driving. My 50 does what it does and I take care of the safety. In my opinion, a person buys a scooter to fit the kind of scooting they need or want.

I agree with the cylinder kit on a 2 stroke, I have the 82cc kit on mine with a 24mm carb. Performance increase was good :), however, I must disagree with "small hit to gas mileage", she goes well but is a thirsty little bugger. I now fill at around 70-78kms. From a 10litre fuel can I get around 180 kilometres. I don't have the figures from before the upgrades, but I am certainly using a lot more fuel. As I have said before, if you want the economy, don't do the mods. I think it was worth it, am currently installing a 44mm crankshaft, though the new cylinder kit is only 47mm.

A person in my area was selling an agility 50 this week , so I went and took it for a ride . WOW was it slow ! I went home and took my people 50 for a ride . They are not even comparible . Conservatively my stock 2002 people 50 is more than twice as powerful and fast . The agility ran and drove fine and I really liked the seat but I would not want to ride in traffic with it . Now I understand why the owners want to try and modify them . Good luck to you a50 owners .

Now I've never rode an A50 but my stock 2010 People 2t seriously sucked. I rode 4 stroke 50s and I'll tell you, not much difference. They must have really upped the restrictions on the newer models. I know they did, my stock jet size was a 70... 70!

So from my experience not much difference stock. But boy did the power come quick with a BBK and exhaust on my 2t. You'll never get the same performance as a 2t. It's common sense, a 2-stroke fires with every rotation while a 4-stroke only fires every other rotation.

My advice is find a good deal on a used 2t, yes they're out there, and throw a BBK on it. Seriously no more <25mph hill climbs for me any more ;D

I remember those dark days before i upped me torque/contra spring. Now i run a 1500rpm one on 5.5g rollers in my A50 and rarely drop lower than 30mph uphill unless its a real steep hill or i have a passenger. Even then i can think the last time i dropped below 20-25mph up ANY hill.

Saying that a 2t has got more oomph uphill, no doubt. Thats my only complaint with my A50, at times you can blast along great well over 40mph and it feels good, then you hit a big hill (or even worse you have to stop on a hill and then restart from stopped) and you lose. ypur momentum and speed and see the queue of traffic behind you. I try accelerate as i approach hills if poss and build up my revs.

You probably already looked into this anyway, i just realised this post was originally from last year.
