Opinions on zx50s
« on: March 01, 2012, 05:31:45 AM »
Just got off the phone with a guy who has one right around the corner from me. Definitely needs some work. I don't wanna give away too much information so nobody steals it out from under me ;). Going to look at it first thing in the morning.

What do you guys think of the ZX50? Has the same engine as the Super 9 AC right?

Whole different animal. The zx is based on the Honda Dio's af18 engine. The biggest advantage of this engine is the parts base for the Dio. EVERYTHING for the Dio works on the zx. You can build them up to 125cc's for under a grand.
The biggest draw back is this is a discontinued engine so not all shops have parts in stock, and it may take a few weeks to get most parts.
The zx is a solid bike w/ really NO inherent flaws. Bone stock they suck monkey wind but a cvt tune up, and decent pipe they will do 50mph all day long. I've had two BBK's on the original cases, and have run the scoot over 70mph with no issues. The bars tend to rack a bit over 60 but not enough to slow out of it. It also sits like a much larger scoot. 34" seat height, and plenty of room to stretch your legs forward. I found by lengthening the wheel base 3 1/4", and lowering the scoot 2 1/4" it handles much more predictably.
The factory wheels are pretty nice too 4" wide aluminum. Using bolt on Schroeder valves you will have no worries.
I like the scoot more than the S9 simply because it is a little tamer or easier to ride. Sort of like a cafe racer vs. a rice rocket.
The retail blue book is 936.00 as of today. Trade in is 4, and change. I found mine for 300.00 w/ 13K, and near mint condition.

Just hit em up with the "It's a discontinued model! Why on earth would I pay xx dollars for a scoot I can't even get parts for" "Come on honey. I want to go buy the one at Pep boys for $498.00"
It really don't take alot to "tighten" one up either

..the zx is an awwesome little scoot..there's no doubt about that...

..key word there is little...

..if you're 6" tall, they're very uncomfortable to ride...or at least for me, anyway...

Nice scoot zombie! Interesting mirrors.

Well, I've put a deposit on my new used zx50. Going to pick it up tomorrow evening. Doesn't run...yet. Like I said it needs some work. I'll have more details and pics posted tomorrow night.

I'm 6'2  :D. To be honest I'm uncomfortable on the people too. I do like the bigger seat on the zx. The people has bigger wheels. Ideally I'd like to have both big wheels and a big seat. Kinda hard with these little 50s though huh?

I would think an engine transplant could be done. I haven't seen the mounts for a peop. but with a few tools anything can happen. Might just be the front end would slip right in to! Very Interesting!
Slinger... You think it is more uncomfortable than an Ag? I tried to enjoy a ride on an Ag. and found my knees were on the bars. I sit all the way back on the z, and run my feet forward like you would before hitting a wall. My legs and arms are straight almost like a WCC Diablo seating. (Grandiose comparison eh). When others ride it does look small tho! Sure don't feel it.
Peters... I'm building a stroked Malossi based engine for a spare. Maybe wanna work a trade for your core engine? 47.5mm Malossi cast jug (compression from 10:1 - 13.5:1) /Ruima 44mm caped crank/Prodigy Rukus var. Bando belt/1500 spring, and 7gr malossi rollers. Guaranteed 60mph w/ stock gears,  65+ w/ 8:1 gears

I'll have to think about that zombie. Will it run on pump gas?

The thing only has 6800 Kms. Looks rough though. I took my compression tester but didn't hook it up. From the feel of the kick start there's something there. No telling til I get it home. I'll feel much better when it's in my garage.

Like a Raped Ape!
I've figured how to tune the Cyl./compression ratio to run on pump gas from 90-93 oct. 10:1 is fine for 90oct at 9500rpm 13;1 WILL WORK ON 93 W/ A COLDER PLUG AT SAME RPM.
It's all about the piston. Protect that bit(h, and all is well in Denmark...
You could lower the cylinder timing/rpms. and run on 87oct. at 8g's but where's the fun in that.
I finished porting and painted the cases today, and will be installing the crank tomorrow nite if I get the time. Dual crank seals too

Ps. I have a few spare OEM jugs if you need one to test out the scoot before you commit to parts. No pistons tho. I do have a new 50mm piston that measured small (49.7mm) if you wanna bore a cylinder

..yeah, its why i ride with my feet on the "passenger" footrests...

I tried the rear pegs, and felt a little "goofy". This is a still restricted scoot, and I felt like a 5 year old pretending to ride a crotch rocket.
I like the style WAY better than the z, just didn't get the fit right. Z has a nice fit but STYLE??? Not a beauty queen for sure.
Since I've run out of mods I'm thinking on how to remove the headset plastics, and run naked "drag bars". That may help the look.
Truth be told I am really wanting to sell it, and start on a new project. ALL the tinkering is repetitive at this point. I figure I'll ask 3g's and take 2750.
I know that is high, but there is not another like it.

I KNOW I is!
I thought about dropping a bracket from the frame near the fuel tank mounting holes, and using BMX axle pegs but it's not a drag scoot so the "goofy" equation came back. I'm really considering a new Mineralli based scoot. I would prefer long/low drag style stance. I'm also thinking liquid cooled 125cc stroked. (50cc base of course). I have an Idea for a dual 17-19mm carb case mod that will put it over the top. Trying to get some input from Scooter Invasion on jug/case design to find a good pot map for 11,000 rpm's.
The idea I have is two forward facing carbs pulling straight into the charging loop of the crank. (aluminum reinforced epoxy glass) for the case mod. I'm trying to move into a shop that has an attached apartment so I can work at will so to speak. Once I get home now I really don't want to go back to the shop I have so I wast alot of usable time.
