Holly cow, the Oregon DMV sucks!

In US dollars, for a 2008 Agility 50 moped that was a gift to my 16 year old son.  $7 VIN inspection fee + $77 title transfer fee + $48 registration for two years + $12 new plate fee.

After that it is only $48 every two years.

To add the moped to our existing car insurance policy is only an extra $85 per year.  That is the good news.  The bad new is that adding our son DOUBLES the cost of our existing policy!

First time ever a "gift" cost me $600 out of pocket!

I did not read the whole thread so if this is doubling someone sorry. Florida is $45 every 6 months (under 50cc), and Insc. is NOT mandatory. Historically scoots under 50cc's must not last more than 6 months here.?.

Just wrote my $144 check to the DMV for title transfer and new plates.  Now it is only $48 every two years for new tabs.

My son is going to get a Moped-Restricted Driver License that allows operation of only mopeds.  He has to pass the Moped knowledge test and a Moped skills test on a closed course.  He is going to keep his car learners permit so he can drive with a parent, but we won't have to add him as a vehicle driver on our insurance.

So I'm going to jump in here and tell you all how much I pay to insure the two scoots I have.

Insurance companies tell me I have what is called "activity" on my licnese.  That's a kind word for accidents, tickets and such.  The last "activity" was in 2007.   With that said...

Scoots:  1. Sym RV250 / full coverage / model year 2010.  $92.18 a month.
             2. Kymco Xciting 500ri ABS / full coverage / model year 2012.  $103 a month.

You all must have perfect driving records.  I'm told most of what's on mine will drop within the next year but wow........  I understand to just have liabillity would decrease my bill but surprisingly, not all that much.

It costs less for me to do full coverage on my car and it's a 2001 Acura CL.

Since the Kymco is a new scoot, I haven't gotten it registered.  To license and tag the SYM, it costs me $200 a year.

In closing, I have looked around for better full coverage.  Progressive had the best rate.

Ride safe.

Don in KC.

The chances are better you (anyone) will damage a bike. Insc. companies rates are based on #'s. The biggest scam in history in my opinion. The first Insc. was started by Munks (forgot the sect) to care for the families of the brother when he passed. From there it was all down hill...

The policy for our 2008 Agility 50 only is $75 per year with Progressive for me, my wife and our 16 year old son.  The agent quoted me $85 but $10 of that was roadside assistance, which we dropped because if he breaks down in town I will just pick him and the scoot up in my truck.

... and/or living in an area with usually careful drivers. Imho that's the most important factor. In Germany you may not drive without passed tests, not even with a L-plate. 50cc-25kph, 50cc-45kph, 125cc-11kW, 25kW and unlimited motorcycles all have their own permission or driving license.

This year 39.64€ liability for my Xciting 500 as I have the license 5 years with clean record. About 100€ without any record.
Full coverage would add 199.61€, as I have no history for that kind of insurance. Together 300€/year which is way less than your $1200.

Florida has a new law for Motorcycles... EVERYONE applying for a Bike endorsement MUST attend a Motorcycle training/safety course regardless of age/experience. Due to our moderate climate lots of people ride year round causing the highest Mc. accident rate in the U.S.

I had been paying almost $200 a MONTH through Progressive.  To break it down :  2010 SYM RV250 @ $92/month AND $103/month for the 2012 Xciting 500 w/ABS.

So I called GEICO and in 15 minutes I reduced the load to $42 for BOTH scoots!

When I called Progressive back, the best they could do with what GEICO was offering was $500 less a year OR $160 a month.

It really does pay to shop around.

It cost me $75 a year to register the SYM.  The KYMCO should be a little more but I haven't got it tagged yet.
