belt length. How do you guys measure?
« on: March 23, 2012, 08:48:09 AM »
Hey guys, ive just been reading some old posts about belt length, and some people say 743 is right while others say that 729 is right.
Theres a diffrence if you measure on the outside or inside of the belt, and unfortunately there aren't a standart for measuring for dealers either.
So.... If you've measured you belt, how long was it, and did you measure on the inside or outside of the belt? ;)

The belt size it taken round the outside. Stock a50 belt length is 729mm long, 17.7mm wide and 30° pitch, so you would want a 729 -17.7-30 belt but a 729-18-30 will work pretty much the same.

I currently run a 736-17.5-30 belt on mine with my race variator and gets me another 4-5mph downhill on a good day. Some folk have run 743 belts on Malossi Multivars and i think i remember someone even using a 748 long belt. If the variator is stock the 729 belt will prob be wnough. I just like messing about, i just got 3 new belts yesterday of various sizes so i can try them out, ones a 729 stock belt icwanted just to keep as a spare.

The biggest problem is that many belts listed as 729 are NOT 729 long. Seems every manufacturer has their own standard. I have at least 2 belts i got in the past that didnt measure up to what was stamped on them. If you check the brand of the belt thats in it and even better get the atock number off it then you can get that exact belt to replace it. Or if you have a race variator fitted try a slightly longer one, the 736 works well for me, best size i found..........so far.

Ive got the malossi multivar on my agility :)
On the other agility i rode with the malossi X kevlar belt (unknown size/cant remember), and it topped at 73 km/h, while the new agility only tops at 62 km/h with the same setup. Im trying to figure out why there is a diffrence, or if the bad oil i rode with in the winter (stupid salesman) when the bike was new have damaged the bearings. :D

I used to top out at between 70-75km but since i put in the Malossi kevlar belt at 736mm long i now get past 50mph downhill. I would try a longer belt. You can buy a cheap one to try it 1st and if it works out you can always replace it with a more expensive one. For me the 736Malossi is about as good as i think i can get, def had my best ever top speed with that belt in, a good 4-5mph better than using the stock 729 long belt,  but i got a 743 one in my garage i want to try soon just to see how that performs.
