What's your MPG on your 500Ri?
« on: April 12, 2012, 02:34:45 AM »
What is the census on 500Ri or 500 in general on mpg fuel consumption?   I live in the hills of Pennsylvania, weigh about 200lbs (with gear) and seem to get anywhere from 48-57mpg (about 1/2 highway driving).  The only modification is I have a 2007 windscreen.

Let's hear it.

Well, we are about the same! I weigh 210lbs and also have the givi tall windscreen. On average I get 48 to 53 mpg on my 2009 500 ri!

I seem to get around 50 on my carbed 2007 with huge Givi shield, box and such. This is at hwy speeds. If I cruise at 75 or so it will dip down some. Two up riding at hwy speeds, sometimes I dip a little below 50, but most often it is at about 50 on the nose. :-*

48-57 sounds better then average that I've heard.

If you do a lot of open road cruising and/or riding above 60mph, you could
get a few MPG more with Dr Pulley sliders.

I've been involved in a similar discussion on another list as of late. One of the things you need to take into consideration when estimating mileage is the type of fuel you're putting in. The states that mandate and provide oxygenated fuel and fuel with ethanol, tend to have less energy per gallon, showing up as fewer miles per gallon.

Some of the empirical data from that discussion came from Ironbutt riders that were charting their mileage during their ride, and comparing it to this chart:

I am averaging 180 miles to a tank. Of course, I ride well above 70 at 60% of the time. I guess that puts me in the low 40's.

Chandler, if you are getting 180 miles from a 3.38 gallon tank, that put's u above 53 MPG at 70MPH plus? Not low 40's? I would say that's pretty darned good!

Still only getting 40mpg.

Warning light comes on around 105-115.

PS we have to use ethanol

(Is your bike carbed or fuel injected)? Do u ride mostly in town or freeway? Do u like to twist the throttle & sport ride? Any of these may cause u to get less MPG. Is your air filter dirty? Is your fuel filter dirty? Have your valves been adjusted of late? How many miles on belt? These can effect MPG also. I would fill tank out of town, get on hwy and run at 55-60 MPH for at least 50 miles, (more would be better like 90-100 miles). Then top off tank before running any miles in town and see what MPG u get. This is a good way to get an average HWY MPG. I think a HWY MPG is what most posters here are reporting? :-*

I'm going 48-52mpg, 2009 RI, original windscreen, cyclegear saddlebags... put on GIVI tall windscreen in wintertime(orlando, Fl.)
173lbs, 5'9". ride 16.5miles oneway to work 5 times a week.

no complains...saving fuel than driving the 2006 Nissan Pathfinder 3.5liter...gas hog.
Never look back, because someone my pass you.

You ARE aware that there are cars that have smaller engines then a 3.5?
Some even utilize stuff we like to call aerodynamics.
Manual gearboxes also save fuel.

I'll never understand the logic behind car purchases you people (US) make.

Most small new cars here (EU) have better fuel economy then a non-FI XC500.

Don't compare a modern hybrid or turbo-diesel car with an (old tech) scooter.
Even very small cars like Daewoo Matiz 0.8 or Daihatsu Cuore 1.0 with their 3 cyl. are barely as economic _and_ fast as a X500 in town and twisties. But they excel on the highway at 90kph in the slipstream of a truck.
BTW: My carbed X500 gets 4.87 litre/100km or 48mpg.

On '07 X500 carb...with mixed riding...stop and go....with mixed terrain (some hills) I am
getting about 48.  I weigh 220.  This is at a moderate speed....35-65 cruising.  The last
tank included mostly flat and longer stretches...and I pulled 54 mpg.

I average 58 to 62mpg but I live in Canada and our gallons (converted from metric) is the old Imperial gallon which has a bit more (1 cup??) to it.  This is driving at 55-60 mph and I weigh 315 pounds and it hauls me around pretty well.
