I bought the Malossi and lost 3mph off the top speed over the stock var. I also caused my belt to start burning up much faster. I reinstalled the stock var and got my speed back and no more burnt belt.

You used the wrong boss if you lost speed and burning the belt. Might have wanted to check the differences in lengths for the bosses when you figured out something was wrong like burning belt.
The Polini has better top speed if thats what your looking for. The Malossi is a high quality good all around pulley tho. You absolutely have to make sure the bosses are the same length if one is supplied, the one for the Malossi is shorter than the zx50, cobra, or the super 8s.

The Malossi I received had a boss that was 36mm long vs 37mm that was stock. I used the one that came in the kit. Another person on the forum had the same issues with belt dust.  Should I have used the stock size boss instead of the one that came in the kit?

Ya, it wont let the belt drop all the way when your at idle and it burns up the belt. It squeezes it, rather than use the old boss i would shim it with a washer.

I found this info on on a Vespa site;

note: in my experience the mallossi variator has less range of motion and the polini has more when compared to stock. The angle of the ramp plate accounts for most of this.
