my 2006 b&w250 shakes pretty good at idle but runs smooth as soon as I begin to accelerate. Is that just the nature of the beast or do I need to do some work on it?

It should run smooth at 1500-1750 rpm at idle.

My 2012 Yager vibrates a bit at idle but is smooth while riding too. So I'd guess yours is normal...

It would depend on your definition of Shakes Pretty Good. Both of my B&W 250s rumble enough when idling to make the mirrors into a linear blur.
